Just as the title reads. Can you shoot a time lapse with a 5D mk 3. I want to shoot it with the camera. I've seen some kind of technique where you can video it in regular mode then speed it up in post processing, that I don't want to do. Is it as simple as buying a off camera trigger with timer?

Yes. Add the intravolometer (sp?).....trigger, set your camera on a tripod and shoot away. Usually set the timing for one image every 3-5 seconds. And remember to set everything to manual.....exposure, ISO, shutter, focus. Have fun with it mostly..

Sweet! Thanks for the response. We are painting our basement and think it would be cool to do something like the timelapse to capture this.

Magic Lantern could do this for free. And it's faster than shipping.

Got my canon remote now one last question. I assume you shoot jpeg cuz theres not reason to shoot RAW, correct? Oh, one other question, what program works best to convert my pics to a time lapse movie. Getting excited to do this. Wife and I are painting our basement this weekend and gonna shoot the whole thing.

I usually use QuickTime. Yes you're right re jpg vs. raw. Also you can use the lower res jpg setting since you only need 1920x1080 for full HD. If you were doing something that had more need for latitude correction you might want to use raw, but if you're painting a room you pretty much have the lighting under control, eh?

Mike,

There are settings that will time-lapse using actual shutter actuation's. MagicLantern has a setting where you can take time-lapse frames without the DSLR actually actuating the mechanical shutter. I wouldn't recommend actuating your mechanical shutter for a time-lapse unless it is a paid production, otherwise you are adding hours to the mechanical wear of your camera. I have only tried the ML° intravolometer once and it seemed to work, but the two options are separate. I think you have to enable the shutterless capture feature and then the intravolometer.

If you're on a Mac, there's also a product called Sequence.

Pretty easy to use.

I went to the Magic Lantern website and it looks like that it doesn't support the 5d mk 3 but if you look in there forums, there are people who use the mk 3 to take videos. Also, do you download magic lantern to your computer or to your camera. I'm totally confused and completely new to this so sorry for the dumb questions. Once I get one under my belt, I won't be posting questions like this.

Magic Lantern is kind of confusing to install on the 5DmkIII, since it's still in Alpha. The features it offers are really worth the trouble, though, if you can avoid getting lost in all the options.
There are actually two ways to shoot timelapse with ML. One is to shoot still images with the intervalometer. The other is to shoot video at a reduced framerate. If you only need 1080p, this may be the easier way to work.
I bought a Radian (external link), which is a super simple way to get timelapse control, plus add some motion to your shots.

Hi,

I read the thread and had a few point-outs on this matter, I was in the same pot a while back when I started with timelapse...

First of, the amazon link to the TC wont work, that is the model with the 2.5mm stereo plug, you need the N3 connector for the 5d3. Get something like this tc-80n3 (external link).

Second, if you have a large enough CF (SD) card, always shoot raw, especially in light changing and challenging conditions.

Third, mentioned above, always set everything MANUAL, you can measure the exposure in P mode and then roughly transfer the settings to M mode.

Fourth, Use lightroom to edit and sync the edited image with other images in the sequence. after you sync, export all to a folder to JPG and desired size... open QuickTime 7 pro (version 8 does not work), click FILE, chose OPEN SEQUENCE... chose the speed (fps) and voila, all done... if happy, save/export file to mp4/avi...

Good luck and have fun.

I am not young enough to know everything. O.W.

Just general ML stuff. You download it to your computer then copy it onto your SD card (or CF I guess). When the camera is starting it checks the card for firmware finds it and uses it. So removing it and resetting is as easy as swapping to a different SD card. I saw on their main page that the basic ML functions (which include intervalvometer) are available for the 5dm3

You can also use Eos utility to do a time-lapse, the cd comes with every Canon camera and you just hook up to the pc, or laptop, no need for memory cards either as you can have them all saved to the pc.

really? it's literally no different than just going out and shooting your kid's baseball game or taking pictures in the garden. If you take a picture every 15 seconds, that's only 480 images after 2 hours; hardly a stress on your camera which is rated for 100-200k shutter actuations.
