So I'm trying to eliminate the need for sync cords. I have a Norman 24/24 with BD, and a Norman ML600. The 24/24 and the ML600 have optical triggers. The ML is a slave optical trigger. The BD is hard-cabled to the 24/24, and the ML600 is on it's own power. I also have a set of YN622's, a few 602's, a YN568EX, YN467, and a slew of other manual flashes.

I'd like to be able to fire the Norman stuff without the use of sync cables, seeing as they can be fired with the optical sensors, how can I set it up? I won't use an on camera flash for this (as a light source, but as a trigger I'm ok with that if possible), and I won't be using TTL (obviously).

Camera is a 50D. Any ideas how can I do what I'm hoping to do?

If steroids are illegal for athletes, should PS be illegal for models?

Analog - Mamiya RB67 Pro-SD, Canon A-1, Nikon F4S, YashicaMat 124G, Rollei 35S, QL17 GIII, Zeiss Ikon Ikoflex 1st Version, and and entire room full of lenses and other stuff

Any manual hotshoe flash will work fine (it must be manual, ETTL will cause the slaves to fire too early with the preflash)
Aim it at the roof, or wall, or something that isnt your subject (unless your outside, then just aim it atthe other flash units, and stick it on the lowest power that will reliably trigger the big units. (I may have had to do this once or twice, when sync cords broke)

These work well:

Any IR trigger will work and your slave cell doesn't have to be anything special. Adding an IR gel to a small manual flash works just as well too. The IR prevents the light from the trigger flash from affecting your image and the one I linked to is both small and recycles fast.

Yes.....
You can wirelessly fire your speedlites (Manual ONLY - NOT TTL) and have the Norman 24/24 as well as the ML600 fire via optical slave. Now your "hard cable" sync problem is solved.....

Did some experimenting tonight.

I have some super cheap sunpak flashes that I picked up a while back. I attached one to a 602 on a little 'flash tripod', and put that on top of the power pack. I then proceeded to take a few pictures of my daughter with just the BD (she was very uncooperative tonight), and everything worked as expected. The only hitch was the recycle time of the sunpak wasn't very good, and had a few shots of nothingness. I did decide to go ahead and get a sync cord (defeating the purpose of this thread), but if I ever want to do it without the sync cord, at least I know I can, with some limitations.
