Canon DSLR Speed Challenge #298


OPEN WIDE !

This week's challenge ... submissions shot EITHER at an aperture of F/4 or below, (where the wide aperture is a critical element of the photo), OR an alternate creative interpretation of the theme. A Submission, EXIF and photograph name are all that is needed. Simply follow the below posted rules, and let your submission speak for itself.

Please keep in mind that the winner of this competition will be in charge of the next week's competition. You will be choosing the theme for the week and picking the winner at the end of the contest.

One more thing; do not forget to include the photograph's name in the message subject line of your post.


This challenge begins when posted, and will end at 10:00 p.m. Eastern time Thursday, 12 September 2013. Winner of this challenge will be announced shortly thereafter.

Photo Submissions:

1. Camera - Any Canon DSLR Camera
2. Time - any on-topic photo taken at any time is eligible, although photos that have won other competitions should NOT be entered.
3. Size - Please visit Image Posting Rules.
4. Post-Processing - do whatever you like and the host will decide if it works.
5. Posting - * ONE PHOTO per photographer in each challenge.* Photo Name in the message subject line.* Camera model & lens used.* Notes -- post brief EXIF data including ISO, shutter speed and aperture used.
6. Commenting - No commenting during challenge. When the posting is closed and a winner has been declared, comments can be made in this thread.
7. Keep it clean, and both Family and Work safe.
8. Have questions, PM me.
9. Have FUN!

Some great shots this week and a number that could have been called the winner.

Jason C "Need I say More?" How many different ways can a theme be interpreted In one photo? Extra style points for a totally unique self portrait.

teekay "2.8 through 1.8" or Time via Nifty Fifty" Nicely done composition that demands attention to the subject.

Kaleb A "Through the opening" Well framed shot that may have benefited from a little more interesting subject.

Maureen Souza "That tongue" Maureen this is one of my very favorites of the photos you have shared here. Wonderful composition, and very nice post production including the frame. A whole lot of personality captured in a subject so young.

airfrogusmc .... "Nursing Student" Wonderful photo ... great composition, attractive subject. Nailed this one. Don't you miss using this lens just a little bit

Kevan "Broken Wing" Another fine photo. Bokeh frames the razor sharp subject nicely. Maybe a bit tighter on the crop but looks great as is too.

groundloop "W-O-W" Fantastic photo that draws one right in. Wonderful composition. Sometimes f9 works just fine to isolate the subject.

swoffa "Homeward bound: You guys are killing me with these great shots. From the blue and gold water to the razor sharp eye and fine composition, this one works. I'm betting you're liking your 5D3 auto focus

NCHANT "Handrail bokeh!" Love the composition, including the three lights on the right margin. Some lovely detail in the focused part of the frame, though my eye wants the silver cone to be in focus. It's intriguing when the viewer is not quite sure what they are looking at.


I've changed my mind a number of times. Shots that could have been declared winners were entries by Jason C, Maureen Souza, airfrogusmc , kevan, groundloop and swoffa.

At this moment I'm choosing groundloop this week's winner. Congrats groundloop and it's time for you to choose next week's subject. Carry on, champ !

I still have the 200 2L. Use it all the time for my professional work. Will be selling it though in the future.

Thanks kbColorado. That photo is of my son goofing around, it was taken in 2005 at the airshow in Oshkosh. We were at the Canon booth waiting to do a dawn patrol photo tour with the folks from Canon. As I mentioned it was taken with a Digital Rebel and the kit lens. When I saw the theme I remembered that photo and pulled it out of the dungeon.

Fun topic, kb. I was all over the place with my entry, my apologies. I've had nighttime shooting in my craw lately, and I tried to use your topic to serve me in doing the 'closed market' shot, which I eventually pulled. I just felt the DOF was inadequate for that subject, and that I could do better. Why I din't take the time to try different settings is beyond me. Sneaking around the market area in town, with a camera, made me rush. The bird I entered was a quick stand-in, and not particularly exciting, agreed.

I'll revisit the market scene again, though I do worry a little that my local police will be less than understanding in my doing so. So everyone, watch the market section here, as I may be attempting to make bail.

Congratulations, groundloop - I thought Maureen's beautiful baby shot was going to be unbeatable, but you outdid it!
