ok i just picked up a used copy of this lens with cpl and a uv and the moment i put it on my 60d it was veryyyy noisy,i was so shocked i istantly thought something was wrong, after googling and reading mannnnny posts it seems this is normal, now i know thius isnt canon top of the line lens but really that noise is normal,my 2 kit lens with is dont make a peep and the sigma 17-50 os ex is whisper quiet with is on,i like the lens and i guess im keeping it as i already paid for it but im a little shocked canon could release something like this in a l series, anyone else have a very noisy copy

It's a noisy lens for sure - the IS engages with a thunk, that startled me when I got my copy. But it is all sweetness after you press the shutter! ;)

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

Assuming you have the IS version, which can be a bit noisy, its actually a bit of a good thing. That lens has a 4 stop IS which is more effective than that in other lenses.

I remember I got a Sigma 70-200 cheap tele. It sounded like a cat screaming when it was trying to AF. Its horrific. Due to that it rarely got used.

I think that all IS from that period of time are pretty noisy. My 300 f4 IS sounds like it is grinding corn.
