Dead battery in Maui

Just whining here.

8 nights in Maui. 2 in Hana.

My 7D battery was dead when I went to take the first photo. Recharge - it died after 2 shots. Yip, its dead.

Maui doesn't seem to have a camera shop or anywhere that sells Canon batteries (that I could find).

I shrugged and said "oh well, I'll just use my wife's P&S. DSLRs are really only that much better for low light stuff and I'm here to unwind, not get consumed with photography.".

In hindsight; I don't know what I was thinking!!! I should have either bought a new DSLR at Costco (optionally returned it at week-end), or had a new battery over-nighted.

Yikes; P&S Dynamic Range ... I never remembered it being this bad! Oh well. I'll find a framer but they're just painful to look at.

Hmm. Guess I should have brought a computer or stopped in the lobby.

Oh well, it was great to just unplug for a week. Next time.

The underwater rentals look interesting. That would be a novelty.

I guess I just wasn't into it. Looking back, I sort of wish I were.

Going anywhere important with only one battery is,,,,,,

I have used their shop in Lahaina and the staff are most helpful. They don't carry a great deal of stock but a battery you might be lucky enough to get. Honolulu is a whole different story, their store is hard to get to, they carry next to nothing and the staff were totally unhelpful.

I can't imagine going on a trip to the islands without extra batteries and a computer. The concierge of virtually any hotel or condo complex could have found the camera store for you.

One of the first accessories I bought for my camera was a spare battery. I found a Pearstone on Amazon for about $20 or so. It has better life than the Canon brand that came with the camera.

I suppose that sometimes its a mood thing.

The point of the thread is; P&S IQ doesn't compare even in the best of conditions. I for one managed to forget that. Analogous to some millionaire who forgets the hardships of poverty until he looses his wallet on vacation and those $100 bills aren't so easily replaced. If I'd viewed the first day's shots I would have done something to get my DSLR working quick. P&S is definitely a poor-man's photography. Sheez.

Anyway; trip ended last Sunday. The P&S shots are painful to look at, IQ-wise, but they'll suffice. Lesson learned.

My wife and I made a less deadly mistake on our first overseas trip. We had enough batteries for our 5D2 but forgot our SD600 P&S. Since I did not want to carry the 5D2 to dinner, we lost a lot of good food shots without the SD600.

SO...on our next overseas trip 3 years later, we had lots of batteries, the 5D2, a G12, A2200 and two iPhones. We were ready for anything!

I love Lighthaus photo in Lahaina. They rent gear so sometimes I have rented lenses & tripods there. Plus it is just around the corner from the condo we always stay in.
