OK- rookie question- how do you get such a great shot with that bright gray sky behind? Those just kill me- so bad that I've stopped even taking those type of pics- they come out with the subject so dark.

Exposure is really tricky.
1) Lock exposure on something about as bright as your subject (try the grass about 10ft out) and then recompose on the subject.
2) Set camera to spot metering and lock metering to the active AF point and focus on the bird.
3) Shoot in camera raw if you can. Expose for the bird and adjust in photoshop.
