Just wondering how much impact switching on wifi has on the battery life of the 6D.

I will be hiking for 7 days and battery life is precious - but I have four batteries and would really like to use the eos app on my iphone for some long exposure night shots of the sky.

Maybe an hour or two is what I think this experiment will be for - what is the estimate for battery that would be used up on the camera?

Why not just turn wifi off? Or better yet, just leave the camera off.

The biggest killer of battery life is the display. I think if I had a 6D I would just leave it ON and put it on a table all day. Then you could use that metric as to how much it will use just sitting idle. Canon has stated that sleep mode is damn near the same as being off in terms of battery usage. Unless it is polling for a signal all the time, I suspect a camera with wifi is going to be the same.

I will be leaving the wifi off.

For the short period when I want to try get some night shots, it will be nice to have the ability to shoot 'bulb' without touching the camera.

I'd recommend purchasing a Canon RC-6 wireless remote for long exposure bulb shots. The EOS Remote app doesn't work very well for bulb shots because you have to keep your finger held onto the button on your smartphone in order to keep the shutter open in bulb, which, needless to say, can be a little difficult and irritating.

With the RC-6, all you have to do is set the 6D to bulb, click the remote once to start taking the photo, and then click the remote again once you want it to stop. And you wouldn't need to use wifi at all, which would conserve battery life.

Do they do 'generic' shutter releases for the 6d? I use mine for my 40d and it locks into place when the button is depressed (rather than having to press is twice)

It cost me about £6 and I would say it's one of my most useful pieces of equipment.

I'm sure there is, but the wireless one is only $20 and works with most, if not all, modern Canon SLRs. I originally bought it for my T3i and was pleasantly surprised to find out it worked for my 6D as well.

The 1DX is one of few new EOS bodies not supporting the RC-6, stupidly enough. On the other hand, video can be started with a wired remote on the 1DX, which also is pretty unique.
