One Step Before The Fall at ZOO (Edinburgh Fringe)

In partnership with the Czech Centre in London, ZOO Venues hosted a trio of Czech Dance Showcase works. I photographed all three, but first and foremost has to be One Step Before The Fall - a dance work inspired by the story of Muhammed Ali accompanied by live music from a Czech Grammy Award winning singer.

It was technically stunning: the bespoke lighting rig used in addition to the theatre's standard rig required power to be drawn from another part of the building; the raised stage and floor that came to form a boxing ring was assembled in under 15 minutes prior to the performance, including rigging microphones underneath to accentuate the sound of the performing hitting the floor; additional mics were also hidden in her hand tape to raise the sound of her hands moving through the air and hitting one another - these latter facts accomplished without us knowing until their technician told us. Along with a great performer and perfectly matched live music, it was a great show and deserved its Herald Angel Award and Total Theatre nomination.

These shots are excellent! I love the cropping choices and exposures. I think you might be able to create some dramatic effects in Curves by blacking out the background more so that some of the noise in the subject disappears, you will certainly lose some detail in the background but the effect may be more dramatic. You could even try selecting out the subject so you don't lose any detail there and only in the background. Just a suggestion, these are really very good the way they are. I like the large crops with the upper lights for effect. Great job...
