my 2 year old 5d2 is facing an annoying issue right now - the top scroll dial (used to change ISO usually) sometimes doesn't engage the gears (there should be a clicking sound) when scrolled to the left. it always works when scrolled to right though.

called Canon and they are charging me US200 just to replace the dial alone. in view of the exorbitant charges, is there any chance that i could DIY and fix it myself? would need some instructions and sources for the components. at the same time, perhaps i could fix the "creaking body" issue as well.

let me know if anyone has the expertise on this matter! :)

I don't have a 5D2 but could it be the rubber ring that is over the dial is slipping, hence the click to change your setting is not being made?

Equipment list - According to the wife - "how many more lenses do you need? Yet another camera?" ???

Did you buy the camera NEW from an authorized retailer and have the receipt? The might treat it as a warranty repair. Might being key word here. Otherwise would you want to risk screwing up your camera royally by trying DIY repair on a camera that you might have paid $2k for? Send it in to Canon with your documentation and see what they say. If they need to bill you $200 for a proper repair, bite your lip and pay it! Yea, I wouldn't want to spend the coin myself but if I had to to fix my camera, I would, for sure.

My old post:

HEY! You have the same problem I had a few days ago on the 30D and fixed it for my boyfriend!! Here's the threads I read to fix it, your shutter wheel isn't turning / clicking all the time right? It feels like it's slipping or sliding and not changing your shutter speed. This is your solution! The rubber wheel is not in contact with your plastic wheel that it rests on so like most people who fixed it themselves rather than send it into Canon:

1. Shine a flashlight down into the shutter wheel area and you'll notice that there's a plastic piece under the rubber.
2. You lift the rubber wheel using a toothpick, needle, paper clip or whatever is thin enough to clear into the camera.
3. Put some super glue on the plastic wheel via using another toothpick, needle, paper clip and etc...BE CAREFUL not to let the super glue drip anywhere else but into the groove of the plastic wheel (like a tiny drop).
4. Let it sit for 10 mins. and it's good as new!!
5. THANK YOU POTN FOR FIXING MY CAMERA! and happily want to share it with you.

Read those two threads and it's the same method I used to fix mines. Good luck! I didn't see a reason to send it to Canon for a minor fix. I'm a DIY'er person, just like fixing my car, I like to fix my camera. xD

HOPE THIS HELPS!!

yes, i have the exact problem which u described. really appreciate that u came forward to share the fix.

can't believe canon wants to charge a bomb for such a simple fix though.

I am quite sure canon fixes this correctly, and not with a bubble gum and duct tape solution. This means taking the camera apart and replacing parts. The quick fix is the option the consumer can take, but canon won't.

How common is this failure? I always thought those wheels were just plastic. Bad engineering to put rubber over plastic on a part that needs to grip and click in detente.
