If you like primes how about the EF 200mm f/2.8L.
The mkII version is a very good sharp L lens.

EF 70-200 f/4L for about $710 new.

The IS version is about $1,350 if you can swing it. Less, if you want to go used or refurbished. Excellent lens; I highly recommend it. ;)

70-200mm f/4 IS L s generally right around or less than your budget. It's the only thing keeping me from dropping my Canon kit. Love that lens.

Are you open to buying used? If so then the F4 IS is your best bet.

I would prefer brand new but, I can add geeksquad through bestbuy at anytime since my wife has the "hookup"

so used would be fine.

Canon refurb, 2.8 non IS.

No IS but a monopod is cheap if that extra stability is necessary.

Ok you got me. What the heck good would that do? You're not going to let geeksquad work on a broken lens are you?

Does that work on discontinued gear like a 70-200/2.8 IS I. How would you replace say if you had bought a 200/1.8 used?

as long as they carry it in store or on their website it works.

Now, if I bought a lens and in 1 year they stopped carrying it, I am not sure. I would have to find out.

The 70 200 2.8 IS used falls into $1000 range. That's a constant discussion, whether you want IS and light zoom or powerful heavy zoom without is

Why not get better IQ for less money with 80-200mm 2.8L. Absolutely stunning lens for around $750-$800. Geeksquad won't replace it though.

Straight out of camera with a 40D:
