I've seen RRS's $50 gadget with a bunch of bits for hex, Torq and Phillips screws, but is there a cheaper or better one out there?

Thanks.

simply Google... 'tool hex Torq Phillips', and you find things like this

and

or if you want 'better' you can spend about $110

Cheap tools can be a real PIA. I've got the RRS toolkit, so far it has worked great the couple of times I've needed to use it like installing a Lcf-10p on a nikon lens. Tiny screws that were very tight.

I'm with you on value for money and I really like the compactness of the RRS tool. But I have a series 3 Gitzo and I wonder if the hex heads will be useful for what I suspect are metric bolts.

Haven't had a whole lot of need for Torx drivers. The Victorinox Swiss Army Cybertool 34 has several sizes of Phillips, Torx and hex drivers as well as flat blade drivers. Meets my needs unless on a cruise (where, since obviously a knife-wielding nut-case can hijack the ship and ram a critical governmental/organizational structure, with major loss of life and disruption to operations, a 3.2" blade must be confiscated) where I don't have it available.

If you're talking about the leg joint screws on a 3-series that's a Torx T25 driver for the head and the thread on the screw part is metric 6 (M6).

not cheaper (unless you can find a sale), but excellent quality

Leatherman skeletool (external link) + leatherman bit kit (external link). you'll need to check to see if the bit kit has the sizes you need.

leatherman has more robust multitools that accept the bit kit. I personally have the Wave and If you get it, the bit kit will fit into the provided sheath.

^ +1. Leatherman is good. I like the Mako Ti (external link) which has the Torx T25 for my 3-series but not the 5/32" hex size for everything else. That's available from the bit kit that John links to above.

^+1, The skeletool @ 5 ounces sounds like a heck of a deal for around $50(+bits).

I got the full size Leatherman Surge @ 12.5 ounces + bits a few years back, and carry it to work and everywhere else. I'm a glutton for punishment, haha.

I just picked up the Kobalt 9-Piece Folding Flat End Hex Key Set from lowes for like 6 bucks. So far no issues with it. works as intended.
