Tried out my new lens. I wanted to make a quick trip outside the city limits but time wouldn't permit that this weekend. I did take several from my back yard again, and actually lucked out with this shot. 20 sec exposure 800ISO out of the 2 dozen I took this was the only usable shot.

Does anyone else shoot celestial with 50mm f1.8 lens? If so where to do set the aperture at and the ISO? I wound up with mostly way over exposed shots from all the ambient light around my home.

many people use 50mm lens for shooting constellations. I would say maybe widest aperture will help you if you don't want trails to be left on your image. widest and higher ISO. You can do some trials to figure out the max exposure time that will give you pin point star images.

To be honest, best way to use that lens is with tracking mounts. At 50mm, trails will be seen in less than 20sec which keeps you from getting enough light without streaking. Anyways at 50mm, you are not likely to include the landscape, it's better to use tracking mount with low ISO and longer exposure time.

Welcome to astrophotos.

I have a thread that may help you, real world photos with camera settings, look here.
10 in Astrophotography without telescope

these 2 threads in there were used with 50mm prime lens, shows what can be captured
M31/T1i/50mm/f1.4/via DSS
QUOTED IMAGE

Orion/M42 via T1i/50mm lens/DSS
QUOTED IMAGE

Your 50mm prime is not wide enough to truly capture what you are trying, do you have a zoom lens, possibly the 18-55mm zoom?
Just FYI - There is a forum called "talk", this is the "photo" sharing forum.

5 sec, ƒ/1.8, ISO 1600, 50 mm

Next time I will try 2 seconds, ƒ2.8 and ISO 6400 with the 6D and see how that goes.

Also, the 40mm pancake gets excellent results:

I agree - show off !
Your ability to go ISO1600/3200/6400 on the 6D totally kills my ISO800 T1i max ability.....
