Hello,

Title says it all! I'm looking to see what people are getting for their fastest shutter speed using a 5D3 camera, miniTTI/FlexTT5/AC9 trigger with an alien bee800. I'm looking to bring the AB800 outdoors and want to get past 1/200 for lower aperatures. I've done some searches but I just can't get a clear and concrete answer. I'm hoping to hear at least 1/1000 before I purchase the PW's!

Thanks in advance.

I have the same setup and have NOT tried it myself, but I believe it is possible if you setup the PWs to do HSS in the software...

Check this out as well:

Thanks for the info!

However it looks like I'm sort of capped off at shutter speeds of around 1/640 before the pesky line shows up. I'm hoping for F stops < 2 shooting into the sun and lighting my subject with an alien bee. I guess I can use 1 or 2 EX flashes with HSS to get my faster shutter speeds?

Line shows up in that PDF, but putdoors you will have better results... Especially if there is a lot of ambient light

I dont see good results with the 5D3 and Hypersynch. What i saw on the pocket wizard site was what i got with my 5D3 testing. Line was at the bottom of the pic at 1/320,,,,,very dissappointed becuase my MKIV allowed me to got to 1/2000 w/o a line at all.

So what I do is use ND filters, fast glass, and shoot for shallow DOF for outdoor use. I much prefer the ability to use Hypersynch like I had with the MKIV but the 5D3 wont go there.

Im all ears because i use strobes outside. Hoping someone got it to work with an einstein,, that would give me an excuse to buy one if it will let you shoot with faster shutter speeds.

Im not a big fan of HSS and speed lights. I like that you can kill the ambient, but it has that look to it that i dont like. You can tell its been killed with HSS. You need to mess with ISO and too much in post to make it look presentable to me.....I would rather use NDs'

The PDF linked before was the results from using the "highest energy" setting. You want to look at the "reduced clipping" results here (external link).

Still not the greatest, but more of a gradient than a hard line. I did find my results were very similar to theirs (7D) with the 60D/Einstein so I expect yours would as well.

Side note: I have no idea if the AB800 and AB1600 are equals in this area. Same tech so I would assume so.

The stuff you named including the B800 costs $770 give or take a a few bucks. And you only get 320ws of light.
For $635 give or take a few bucks, you could get 1320ws of light and sync up to 1/8000th. White Lightning X3200 and Yongnuo 622c

Please elaborate. Why is the white lightning any different than a 1600 or an Einstein or anything else at keeping the gate out of the picture. I get that it has more power. Cool. But how is the triggers making any difference on a 5D3,, also were you in AV or manual....exactly what did you do to get a 5D3 to Synch at 1/8000,,,,,,all ears

Well,I didn't use a 5D3 in above shot. I used a 60D. The difference between the white lightning and a AB and Einstein is flash duration. The flash duration of the WL is very slow compared to the Einstein and AB. Since the YN 622's offer hss,it can take advantage of any strobe with a slow flash duration. Full power on a WL is 1/300. Also,I was in manual mode.

this whole conversation hinges on a 5D3... thanks for playing! ;-)a

White lightning flash duration is longer, from everything I've read/seen they are very capable HS lights. No first hand experience (the most important kind) but once again the tests on the PW wiki definitely show the WL as more usable than the AB. Even the high energy tests (vs. reduced clipping) holds up well. I also like that fact that full power is not required like my einstein.

Take it with a grain of salt but I think he may have a point on the WL if hypersync is important to oneself.

There are 21 photos in this gallery, all are over 1/4000th with the majority being shot at 1/6000. If you're prompted for a password, it's notbasran. Might be a capital B. :)

Speedlight or strobe. Yes you can shoot in manual mode and kill ambient with the PW's with speedlights. we are talking about triggering strobes.
