I'm wondering if the 50/1.8 may have unit-to-unit variability that's responsible for its bad press. I was just testing AF on it last night in a dark room with a single fluorescent tube and it nailed focus, quickly, each time.

could be some quality control issues on the Canon assembly line. There could also be a "person-to-person" variability when using a lens.

Used both the lenses last night while it was getting dark and found out that the 40mm pictures turned out better than the 50mm or maybe I wasn't using them right. But I was ready to throw my 50

Both at f2.8? The 50mm is definitely worse at f1.8 than the 40 is at f2.8. Both at f2.8, though, and you shouldn't see much difference.

I have the 50 1.8 and the 40 STM. I have had no AF problems with either. I believe the 40 is sharper, and I like the Bokeh on the 40 more than I do the 50. For one reason or another (it's been discussed in this thread) the 1 f-stop difference has not been a problem or even noticeable but I will freely admit that may be my lack of experience.

I prefer the 40, the 50 stays on my 300D and will move to a 10D that I "accidentally" won on Ebay with a super low bid.
