I have recently acquired a Canon EF 400 F2.8 L IS USM. I am considering to use it with a Manfrotto 393 (Bogen 3421).

I appreciate feedback on this combination in practical use.

For completeness the tripod will be a Berlebach.

Thanks in advance,

Guus

I love the Bogen 3421 except for the fact that it doesn't use the arca-swiss style plates so no interchanging plates and no L plate. If you only plan on using that lens then it should be fine. If you plan on using other lenses without a tripod collar, then there is no way to shoot in portrait mode.

I'm thinking about switching to an Optech gimbal head that can accept arca-swiss plates. From what I've read on the Optech, it is good after cleaning it when you first get it. It goes for around $150 so about the same as the Manfotto 393/Bogen3421.

Everyday use: 7D2, 1.4x v3 Canon TC (sometimes the 2x v2 Canon TC), Canon 500mm f4 L IS USM; 6D, 24-105L
