first, i separated the green and brown colors.
Make them more vibrant, and some more saturation.
Added some sun-flares
repainted some parts, yellow and some tints green, to get a more telling image. and some dept in it.
put a high/low filter on the water to make it a bit more pop out of the image.

here is my version. Applied a blue gradient over the sky, increased contrast for more depth, added some yellow and blue to the foliage and water, applied a USM filter and that's it :)

Thanks but it's just a straight edit using AlienSkin's Exposure 7. Nothing very creative done by me "manually" other than think of using that particular preset...oh, and to use a hand written font for the name. ..oh, and the idea that John Muir would have a photo like this in his wallet in the first place. :-)

I might have gotten a little carried away. :-P

Pushed the shadows, pulled the highlights and made some vibrance and clarity adjustments in Lr.
Went into Perfect Effects 8 to add some dynamic contrast, added a high pass layer while I was in there.
Into PS I added some motion blur to the water (missed a few spots in the foreground, oh well)

Then I kinda went nuts adding some additional "elements."

Wow, what a group of fantastic edits! How do I choose just one?

While I love the "added animals" edits and appreciate the time and effort involved, I'm a sucker for the old Tin-type look. I'm not sure why but I've always loved that look. I used to sit in my high school library and pour through volume after volume of books on early photographs.

So, I choose navydoc's edit as the winner. Over to you Gene, and congratulations.
