under the right circumstances, the 2nd curtain/shutter drag can produce some pretty great results. but there are times where you can't use a flash to freeze the subject, so it's a mix of good timing and serendipity.

here's a couple of my tries at this, one from last year and one from last weekend.

post 'em if you got 'em!

I'll need to try that when I can use flash. Looks great.

narlus, in your second shot did you flash then move the camera clockwise a bit, or, move the camera anti clockwise and flash at the end of the exposure?

The shot suggests Flash and twist to me but I guess you could do the same in reverse.

Gotcha, so just pure drag shutter. Great stuff :)

( Must learn to read thread titles more closely.. ;) )

Hmm - honestly I'm not sure about these yet. I think ones that may work a little better would have a really steady element in them somewhere and the motion blur comes from the subject's motion and not the camera's motion. So I like the first one better than the second one. I will definitely have a go at these sometime!

yup - fully agreed. But I am thinking focus point on a mic or a drum or something static and expose for whatever you can hold reasonably still for. Just an experiment, I may be completely wrong!

My website has my most recent work - macro photography (external link), live music photography (external link) and am working on a book focusing on Brisbane live music (external link) as my way of giving back.
I also have some photography tips (external link) for those with new cameras.

a friend of mine saw Chelsea Light Moving a week or so ago, and ran into Thurston before the show. He showed him my shot (#1) and Thurston dug it. :)
