First Wedding - Honest C&C

Hi All,

I shot my first wedding as a second shooter, but it was more of a mutual effort in terms of guidance (other guy only had one other under his belt). I'm looking for some honest C&C to get a general feel for how I have done and what I can do better next time. Picking eight photos was terribly hard, so feel free to check out my set on flickr. Out of my 900 shots, I had about 250 keepers in my opinion.

This was a small and short wedding (noon to 3pm) with some tough lighting that I wasn't used to.

Nice! A shame you didn't get the garter in frame on the last one, but their faces are priceless!

We think they look just fine. They put a smile on our faces (wife and I). Anything can be improved, but you certainly did the client well.

Any chance this was shot around Solomons Island MD or Calvert Cliffs MD?

Exposure and contrast look pretty good. The photos are a bit cool, temperature wise. No clue why #6 was shared? If it has significance to the bride/groom, that is great. However, in a portfolio setting, it is pointless.

My one posing tip (take this with a grain of salt) is to shoot larger people from above, when given the opportunity. It helps conceal unflattering aspects they might not want to see in their photos.

Overall, congrats on a solid job.

Thank you! Nope, the venue was at Falls of the Ohio, Indiana.

Thank you for your comments! I warmed some shots up locally and wow, what a difference. I didn't realize how cool my set is...

And I agree about the posing, in many of my shots (not uploaded) I was standing on a picnic table, but didn't have that luxury in most cases.

Wow. Great job. I love the set. Of the ones here, #5 and #7 are my favorites. Watch your crops (or composition) on #1 and #2, the frame is cropped a bit too close to your bride & groom's heads. I would also decrease the highlights and increase shadows in #7 and #8. I'm not personally a fan of the bright white washed out look (a lot of folks are doing that now - gives it a heavenly look), but when it comes to the bride's gown, you lose a lot of detail that way. The bride often pays lots of money for the gown and she wants to see the detail in the photos. Turning down the highlights will bring some of that detail out. Another tip to bring out detail in the whites if the scene is overexposed or washed out, is to lower contrast and increase clarity in LR.

These are small items. Overall, you did a great job! Thanks for sharing.
