I just picked one of these up today from a local seller for a good price. The lens itself is in great shape, but I'm having trouble seeing any benefits of the IS system, which has me wondering if the IS is working.

So my question is, does the IS mechanism make any noise on your copy? My lens is silent as can be, and I'm not seeing much of a difference in the viewfinder with IS on or off.

One other thing, the lens still auto focuses with the switch set to MF. Not sure if this is normal or not. Any help is much appreciated.

Weird... Makes me think there are some electrical demons in that lens!

The IS on the 70-200 IS is quite audible. You should hear it working. And as it is the older IS system, should be even louder than the newer Mark II version which is still clearly heard. It should at least chirp starting/stopping.

And it should not AF when the switch is on MF.

I can hear/feel the IS working on mine.

Zoom in on a stationary object far away with IS on and half press the shutter. The viewfinder should stabilize and you should notice it.

Thanks all, you have confirmed my suspicions. Does anyone know the return policy for Craig's list? :)

4 flat tires, some blown windows and few scratches to make damage equal to lens? ??!!

Ouch...I hope you got a super duper good deal. Hopefully, the lens can be repaired.
