I typically do nature photography, but recently have started moving more into people photography. I was messing with my light setup the other day (two external flashes fired into umbrellas on either side of the camera at about 45 degree angles from subject) to get this portrait - a self-portrait actually. Looking for any tips on absolutely anything here (lighting, PP, etc.) to improve a portrait like this in the future.

Thanks in advance!

The lighting looks clean. Not sure how I feel about the specular highlights on each cheek and on the forehead. At first I liked it, now . . . not sure. But certainly, it's a crisp photo and a good effort.

One nitpick - you need some collar stays. The bent collar is distracting my eye.

Thanks! I wasn't sure about those highlights, either. Any suggestions on how to reduce that?

Some suggestions:

1. Turn your head just a little to hide the far ear.
2. Make your background match your clothing in brightness and color. If you had used a grey background (or black with a separation light), more attention would be put on your face.
3. Make one light your 'key' light, which will be brighter than your second 'fill' light. Place the key light to your left, and so that its direction runs parallel to the left side of your nose. Make sure it's not too high that it causes your eyebrows to shade your eye sockets. Place the fill light as near to the camera/lens as possible. You don't want to evenly light your subject, but rather increase the brightness gradually from one side of the face to the other. Your avatar does a good job of this.

light is pretty even.... I prefer my portraits to have more depth. A Key light, Fill light, hair light, and even a background light.
