About 8 months to a year ago, my office paid a photographer to come and shoot resume/bio photos for all our employees for our marketing materials. The guy they hired did an OK job, though the posing was a bit awkward and the make-up and post was a bit excessive on some people. There is a handful of people who are unhappy with their shots.

Last week, I was asked to shoot a small group photo for a marketing e-blast. While setting up for the shoot, one of the people showed up a little early, so I asked her to stand in so I could dial in my settings and adjust my lighting. I ended up shooting a handful of shots of her, and pushed a few of the shots from my 5d3 to my tablet via my eye-fi sd card to double check my settings. She took a look and liked them so much that she asked me to send it to our graphics department to replace her resume/bio photo. My company president saw the pictures, and asked me if I could reshoot her resume/bio photos. I currently have 3-4 people I may have to reshoot... Which is a little intimidating now.

The guy they hired had a make-up artist, assistant, portable lighting setup and was shooting with a 1DX... I just shot a 3/4 portrait using a large window, and my 580ex and a 24x36 peace of foam core, and photography is just a hobby for me...

I have lighting gear for my home studio, but I'm not sure I want to lug all that stuff to my office, and I've never shot with it outside of my small space at home, and never shot anyone else besides my wife and my 20 month old son (who are pretty patient with me, I must admit).

I also only know really basic posing, so I'm also a bit intimidated by that's as well. Just looking for some advice on this type of shoot, anything. Should look out for, etc.

I'm used to shooting just office events, client parties, in formals, and the occasional marketing shot. I'm an architect by trade, and photography is just a hobby. So this is a little scary...

If they liked your earlier attempt, just try to repeat it. You can get good results with minimal gear.

This photo was shot with one off camera light fired into an umbrella.

However if you want advice on how to shoot head shots like the one below, then you will need more than one light & modifiers.

Eh... so what the guy had a 1DX :P. The 5D3 is on par with that camera in terms of image quality. If they liked your picture so much more.... then I think that says something about the other guy if he had a makeup person and all this other junk. You obviously have more skill. Sometimes a person with a T2i could be much better than a person with a 1D, makeup artist, lighting, etc. It is all in the photographer.

Don't be intimidated. Just be open with them. Tell them "I would love to do this, but please understand I do not have a makeup artist like what you had last time". They will probably respond with something saying "well if you can do what you did with **** already we will be more than happy with the results". Plus since you have the eye-fi card and a tablet you could always show them the images really quick and ask if they are happy with it or if they would like something a little different. You work with these people so they will be much more open to talk/work with you. I am sure they will be much more comfortable having this done in house.

so first off, congratulations. That has to feel good :). And second off, good luck! Post back and let us know how it goes!!!

Thanks, I'm happy they are confident in my abilities to shoot this stuff, and I might be over thinking this. To me, I think a lot of people think photography is easy, buy an expensive camera, and point and shoot it, they just expect it to be nice...

I guess we'll see how this goes... Thanks
