Has anyone sent a camera to Canon for repairs?

I wasn't sure where to post the question. I'm just curious about the experience.

I bought a Canon SL1, and as soon as I got it I was having problems with it. I kept getting an error 20, it said to remove the battery and put it back in. That didn't seem to resolve the problem. Sometimes the problem would get fixed by resetting all the settings. It didn't always work though. The good thing about Canon is that there is a Canon Service Center in Irvine, CA. I decided to drive there yesterday. I was attended very quickly! The lady working asked me if I kept receiving that error message with every lens, and I said yes. She then turned on the camera with the lens, and said it was the camera body. She said since the camera was new, it would be free to fix it. I just checked the status of the camera online, and it says "The quality inspection of product functions has been completed and your product will be ready for delivery shortly." I hope I receive the camera soon!

I would have just got a new one from the retailer!
If we all did this manufacturers would up their QC game.
Why did you go the repair route?

I would not fault the OP for going the repair route, especially sine it seems Irvine was not likely a difficult drive. The OP now knows he will have a camera that has been looked at by a Canon tech. Not all cameras go through QC when originally assembled so a replacement woul have been a crap shoot. Read the threads on refurbs and you'll see most people are very happy.

Here in the UK our "contract" is with the retailer, not directly with Canon. So its the retailer who dealt with any issues I've had in the past.

I agree with Submariner. I would contact the seller to exchange the camera with a fully functioning one. If I buy it new I expect everything to work right out of the box.

I thought Irvine service center stopped handling Rebel cameras a few years ago. I called them up last year to have my T2i serviced (sensor cleaning) but they refused to take it. They only handle pro line camera equipments (5D series, 1DX, L lenses etc).

Oh, I meant that the camera is a new model. I bought it used from a member at FredMiranda. They didn't even ask for the warranty papers, or anything. Maybe they know with the serial number when it was bought?

I actually took my T2i also to have the sensor cleaned, but that was early last year.

Ok, that makes sense. I contacted them in the first quarter of 2012 also but was turned down. I guess if I visited the service center without calling first, they might've accepted it. It's a gamble for me though (it's about 40 mile drive) if they still refuse to touch it.

With my experience of Irvine and new cameras, I think I'd prefer to have a camera fixed and looked at by them than a new one that initially appears to function properly.

i think they know when it was manufactured, not bought. it should be relatively easy though to estimate when its bought. most cameras dont sit on shelves for too long.

Yeah, that's what I was also wondering. It barely came out this year. The camera is already out for delivery. That was quick!
