Don't under estimate the older 35-350 L, in the right hands it's a great lens outdoors, or go for a 70-200 f4.

cheers everyone

even though i was looking at second hand, the 70-300L is way out of my budget so unfortunately im going to have to look a bit lower in terms of cash. i can afford the L, but im not a pro & i dont use the 70-300 all the time so it just doesn't warrant that kind of outlay (for me)

55-250 is something i'll have a look at but i think id miss that tiny bit extra reach that the 300mm gives me - i do often use it at the long-end you see

interesting that a few have come back & mentioned the tamron - just to confirm, i assume we're referring to http://*******/4Zebmf

Since the L is not in your budget the most recent Tamron VC would be the way to go.

I just got a 55-250 on ebay for $101.47. I hope it works, though.

Samyang/Rokkor/Vivitar series 1 500mm mirror? Seen some great images on flickr from this. And someone's selling the Vivitar branded version for £85 on amazon with free tripod and extras. Yes I know it needs a tripod and proper usage, but I'm considering it. What do the members think? Are there any problems with it?
