Bags on wheels

Although old age is diminishing my strength, it is NOT diminishing my passion for photography. Nowadays travelling by air with my gear - I loathe airports - is becoming increasingly difficult. I have been searching the internet for a lightweight camera bag on wheels, and am dismayed by the weight of these items. A decent bag alone weighs around 4 Kg. But my 300 mm f2.8 lens and camera together weight 3.2 Kg, immediately putting the weight of my cabin baggage above the 7 Kg limit.
The illustrations on the internet of these bags stuffed to the eyeballs with gear make you laugh at the notion they would ever be considered within the permissible weight limit.
Does anyone know of a lightweight, yet strong, bag on wheels that would carry the above gear?
Thank you for reading this.

Assuming you mean overhead storage, I've used this roll aboard:

It's not padded for photo gear but plenty roomy and light.

Mike, this just gives me a great idea - and cheap! Just get a really lightweight wheelie bag and put my existing back pack inside it. That way I get the wheels for only a little extra weight and cost.
If I had a brain I could have thought of that myself, but as it is, I have to pass the credit to you.
Thanks.

I ended up getting a very large think tank bag and I didn't get one with wheels.... after a while I was getting tired of it so I ended up getting the fold up bag cart to carry it around in.

I have been down the same road. Sold my TT airport security v2. For my domestic travel I found a cheap Eddie Bauer bag at the local target store for $70. It is a computer rolling case. I load a backpack and place it inside. It also holds my laptop and misc. gear. Hard to find them, but here is a link. http://www.luggagepros.com …lling-computer-case.shtml (external link)

Cheers, Steve

Thank you Steve and Christopher. It certainly makes sense to go this way and with the money saved one could almost buy another air fare (well, to somewhere not too far away).

The fundamental problem is that the wheels and handle themselves always add weight to the bag!
I am directly familiar with the somewhat inflexible weight and size restrictions that are imposed by the Australian and New Zealand carriers. How are they with counting a very compact set of foldable wheels against your carryon count? I often use something like this...

Thanks, Wilt.
I will have to make inquiries about these little trollies. Umbrellas and tripods are not allowed in carry-on baggage because they think the tubular steel rods could conceal offensive weapons. I am not sure about these little fellows. Would be great if they are allowed.
Can you please give me the brand name of this one so I can google it?

Thanks everyone.
Update is this. I was able to buy one with a couple of discounts, so it didn't cost too much. Rang Virgin Australia, described the gadget in detail and asked whether I would be able to take it in the cabin with me. The firm answer was "NO". But as a concession to people with disabilities, they will help carry "carry-on" baggage from the point of check in to the aircraft. If they are as good as their word, my problem with getting on the plane is solved. Still not sure what happens at the other end. But that is half the trip taken care of.
Thanks again for your advice.

I purchased an Airport International. Only problems I have run into is the overhead weight restrictions. Employees on a few flights noticed it was a camera style bag with wheels so they weighed it. On one occasion i had to remove 3 lenses and put one in my wife's purse, my jacket pocket and my 300L went into a plastic bag.

So you need to be mindful of this. Will it ever happen to you? Maybe not but make sure it fits under the seat which would not be comfortable for a 7 hour flight. Perhaps bring an extra fold up bag just in case. I don't use it anymore on flights, just locally. For now I use two back pack style bags. It is not the best but I can still handle them.

We are have taken our Lowepro Proroller 200 bags on two safaris and numerous domestic trips. They roll like breeze through airports and fit in airline overhead.

Thanks McAsan,
I have just looked at this one on the 'net, and it weigh 5.9 Kg empty. This doesn't give much flexibility when your airlines require the bag and contents to weigh no more than 7Kg. This really takes us back to my original posting which pointed out that the wheelie bags themselves are too heavy to permit much gear to be carried. I guess it has a lot to do with whether your airlines care much about applying their rules. It seems some are stricter than others.
Thanks for responding. It really is an issue that needs more attention.
Cheers

Mine fit too but I had was a snoopy Westjet employees that on two occasions made me weigh it. It may never happen again but it turned me off to using it.
