I found action on the Great Western Railroad on Friday, Jan. 27. These engines were working southwest of Johnston, CO. The red engine is Central Kansas Railroad No. 2232. The gray engine is marked OSS 4285. What railroad is that? And can someone ID the engine's make and model for me?

It COULD be privately owned...just a hunch. I see units like that often with odd colors/graphics and 3 or 4 letter names (not spelling out anything).

I quick google search turned up nothing, so I doubt you're going to find any info on the web unless someone knows first hand.

Nice shot...the landscape is beautiful there. I envy you.

Here's some info on CKR. http://www.depotnews.com …dNews/NR007.htm#Our%20CKR (external link)

Scroll down to "Other Short Line News" and you'll see a mention of the head unit in your pictures. :)

The gray and blue engine is either a GP7 or a GP9. The red engine is probably also a GP7 or GP9, but it's got a different cab on it. Whatever they are, they've obviously had at least one major rebuild, and that makes identification hard.

Thanks for the info, Mike and JT. I enjoyed reading about the CKR. Sounds like another struggling shortline. I jogged between Longmont and Johnston, staying as close to the tracks as I could. I was encouraged to see new depressions in the dirt at several of the road crossovers of the tracks, indicating that sometime fairly recently, a train must actually have run between Johnston and at least as far as Mead.
