i really wanted to capture this photo the way I saw it. i was in an old iron furnace looking up. the way the lighting was inside, i thought it would make a great shot....if i could have captures it as it was. the only thing i did was slow the shutter speed down a tad and no flash. at the top, at the great....i feel is to bright. would a larger f stop have corrected this ?

Because of the large dynamic range between the dark shaft and the bright sky, probably the best way to have shot this would have been with at least two exposures. One like you did for the shaft and a second without moving the camera metered for the sky. The images would then be blended together using your editing software.

The subject looks interesting. I think it would warrent a second visit.

Photos like this are perfect candidates for multiple exposure blending (i.e. HDR).
You can still make it look natural without the blown out highlights.

Since you have image editing OK on, I took a shot at this one:

Of course, you could always create an opening at the top and place some sky there too...no telling what might pop up when you do that though. ;)

OMG, that's hysterical Navy!

I would also rotate the image, and make the grate either run horizontally or vertically. As it is now, I keep tilting my head.

Glad everyone, including the OP, enjoyed my silly edit. I'm a little surprised no one has asked me just what is popping his head over the opening...

...That's an edited frame from another animated gif I made some time ago from a Disney cartoon about Pluto. The cartoon was made during WWII and featured Pluto as a Private in the Army. Here's the animated gif I made from that cartoon.

Hey Gene, awhile back I asked how you did it, and you explained, but do you have a video on it, or perhaps you used a video on Utube to learn the technique in PS...
