Lately I went to a camera store to see the new 70D from Canon.
I still owns the 40D, that has been recently cleaned by Canon. I wonder what I can get for the Canon 40D if I use it as a trade in and that was nearly nothing.
But then the store owner told me to keep the 40D and have it modified to an infrared camera.
Have any of you done it?
What is normally speaking infrared?

Ronny

Hi, Ronny -

Have you seen the IR image gallery? Good place to ask about conversions.

I just picked up a 20D that was converted to IR by LifePixel (external link). I'm nothing but a beginner in IR, but I will say it's more fun, and more frustrating then anything else I've done. The frustrating part (for me) is the post processing, as for now it's all trial and error.

If you have an interest in IR, having a converted camera is worlds easier then trying to use filters. You can use the camera like normal, whereas with a filter, there are many steps involved, and long exposures, and tons of processing. One thing you may consider is picking up an R72 filter, and playing with that for a little while, then see if you want to commit to IR with a body conversion.

Along with the link above, check out LifePixels webiste. Lots of FAQ's and samples. They're also really helpful over the phone if you have any wuestions not answered on the website.

If steroids are illegal for athletes, should PS be illegal for models?

I had a 40D converted by Lifepixel about 3 years ago. I thought about it for a long time before going ahead, but when they had a reduced price holiday offer I went for it. No regrets! They did a great job.
I find that shooting infrared provides a whole different starting point for images and lets me make use of that bright midday sun that is often too harsh for standard photography. The post-processing takes some practice and results are still sometimes a bit hard to predict. Definitely fun to play with these images though.
Some of my stuff is posted on sgstandard68.smugmug.com, There are IR images in the California gallery and in the IR Dreamscape gallery.

I just take off the high bandpass filter on my Sigma SD15. Then put it on when I want to return to normal.

"Raw" is not an acronym, abbreviation, nor a proper noun; thus, it should not be in capital letters.

I used to have a converted 30D. I loved it because when properly custom white-balanced, the image came out of the camera like this (external link) (with the bronze / gold toning).

I sold it and converted a 5D because I wanted a larger image size. When the CWB is properly set on the 5D, the raw images are almost a perfect black & white. I miss that nice gold tone.
