Holy Moly I wished I would have been turned onto these before. I've been wanting a 36" Octa with a grid. I got an Ez-Pro, cost about $160. The system is great with it's umbrella style mechanism. The fabric is sturdy and the build is outstanding. The Elinchrom speed ring is as good or better than the stock.

I've been shooting Elinchrom Rotolux and Photoflex. The Rotolux are nice and light and fairly easy to assemble, but won't stand the abuse the Ez-Pro's will. The Photoflex are built well, but are more of a hassle to assemble.

I also picked of the FotoDiox 28"BD with grid for $156, I wanted something bigger than my Kacey 22". I like the Kacey built, but for the money, the 28" will do fine.

I agree. I've got one of their 48" octas that I love. I think I'll be adding some more of their modifiers to my kit.

interesting to hear
been curious about picking one up
my problem is often the WB of the fabric is not as nice and can have a pinky tone etc..

and even that comparison that was up a while ago against SP or whatever it was many found the Eli still nicer less hot spots etc.. ?
again not against them would like to pick one up and compare against the eli 100 with my own eyes

the price of the larger ones is very very very tempting :)

I bought a cowboy studio 24 inch pop up box with grid and shot about 22 jobs with it last year the thing wont make another season ?
grid ripped out 3-4 jobs in the diffuser ripped on edge the inside silver started making the white diffuser material marked up somehow ?
my older photoflex stuff I used when I shot about 2-3 jobs a week for years on never had a issue always worked

I do fear cheap stuff sometimes ?

The grid on the EzPro octa is outstanding. As to the color issue with the diffuser, It's not an issue, shot a XRite passport for WB and profile if needed. I tend not to mix lights and modifier manufacturers when it comes to key and fill anyway,

do you have a eli deep 100 ?

if so would love to see the two side by side setup just to get a idea of how deep the fotodiox is ?
do like the fall off and look of the eli deep octa though and its so nice and smooth compared to anything but they are not cheap sadly

I have a 24x36 EXPro softbox and setup time from out of bag to on strobe is crazy fast and easy. :)

Ralph you trying to copy me. ;)
Have the 48" for about 3 years now and never had a problem. It has a warmer color then the Elinchrom Rotolux. The set up time is super fast, unlike the Rotolux were you have to take the diffusers off to setup and tear down. The Ez-Pro just set it up once and leave the diffusers on open the back panels release the umbrella lock roll it / tuck and place back in the bag. To open just take it out of the bag open the panels place the insert ring against your stomach and pull the center ring toward ya. Once the octa is open place on the grid or shoot with out it. The grid is a sturdy nylon and is nothing like the visico or fotodiox cheap octas. The fabric on the Ez-Pro is sturdy and sound like a fabric, were the Rotolux is kind flimsy and sounds like paper.

For the cost of the Elinchrom Rotolux 39" DO you can buy the 36",48",and the 60" Ez-pro w/ grids.

The Rotalux has a set insert ring and the Ez-pro can be changed out to fit any strobe. The Rotalux feels flimsier compared to the Ez-pro. Ez-Pro takes less then half the time to setup and below half the cost. Rotalux is more daylight balanced compared to the Ez-pro.

They have a different throw. The Rotalux is more directional compared to the Ez-Pro, but you can buy the Ez-Pro w/grid.

For the cost and setup time the Ez-pro is the better deal. Location work the Ez-pro hands down wins it for me. The only reason why I kept the 39" DO is because of the label and it makes me look like a pro. ;)

I have a eli 100 :)
love the throw of the light and the fall off etc..
kinda why I was curious to see so I could get a idea :)
for how cheap they are might have to pick up a 48 and check it out

my big thing is I like how smooth the eli can be or you can open up the end diffuser and get some nice harder light

I do like grids sometimes though mainly to control the edge more and wish eli had grids that were affordable ;)
I hate the flashed look on ground in front of people :) but thats me :) hahahaah

changing up a bit what I shoot going to get more into portrait stuff etc..

thanks :)

I've got the 36" and the 60" Octa. I highly recommend them. Such a great deal and easy to setup.
