For owners of the 48" Octa, do you use that inner disc to spread the light? I wonder how effective it is at diffusing the light or if it's just degrading the power output without having much benefit to the quality of light.

I do not. The "beauty dish" disc it comes with is something I don't use. It's cheap unfortunately, it's a silver painted piece of plastic. It has no securement either, it just sits there and rattles and moves around. The inner baffle spreads the light before it hits the outer baffle. You've seen my light with it, I don't think it's necessary to use the inner disc thing.

Very best,

The dish is really only needed if your using a speed light. If your using a strobe or a bare bulb the light spreads throw the octa like it should. Speedlites can't spread like a strobe because its has a focused front, so the dish is needed to bounce back and fill the octa.

The disc or the deflector is useful if you use the octo or parabolic without any diffuser at all to block the direct light from the bare bulb strobe.
Below is my comparison test.

The disc tones down the specular highlights.

If your just using the disk with out the diffusion it becomes a big BD, but the statement I was getting at was you only need the disk if your using a speedlite with the diffuser on.

Exactly. Both lights are good. Depends on the concept we would like to achieve :)

Great. that makes a lot of sense.

I almost always shoot on location and the reason I got this octabox is because it's SUPER simple to set up and break down. The disk make's it pretty clunky.

My RV600 should be coming today, so I can't wait to test it out!

Thanks for all the feedback!

Anybody using the EZ-pro with multiple speedlights?
If so, what are you using to mount them inside the octa?
I asked Scott in another thread about using a Lumopro double flash bracket speedring, but just wondering if anybody has any other ideas?
@Scott, you said earlier that you preferred the EZ-Pro over the Eli, but how do you compare the EZ-Pro to the Rice Bowl?
