Basketball Shooters: 5D Mark III vs 1D Mark IV

Yes, I would love a 1DX. No, that isn't possible at the moment.

I know the advantages and disadvantages of both cameras, but I want to know from people who have had the opportunity to use both which one they would prefer to use to shoot college/pro ball.

1D IV
-10fps
-Build quality (and grip built in)
-Bigger buffer

5D Mark III
-Amazing AF, especially in low light
-Wider (perfect for 70-200, or for ultra wide arena shots)
-Stellar low light noise performance

Whichever of the two I purchase will be paired with the following gear:
7D gripped
17-55 2.8 IS
70-200 2.8 IS II
85mm 1.8
300 2.8 IS I

I appreciate any thoughts you might have.

Knowing that the mods will move this, I don't think the 5D3 ISO handling is a ton better than the 1D4, less than a stop at the raw level. Its AF most likely at most matches the 1D4, but is probably worse, but my sports shooting season hasn't yet started so I am not sure.

College/pro ball, and I had the ability to get either and had to make a decision, it would be the 1D4.

I agree. Having owned both, the 5D3 and 1Div are similar in terms of IQ. 5D3 AF works a little better for low light servo and the 1Div has more FPS. Take your pic. Both are good cameras.

I have both. IQ wise they are both real similar, maybe 1/3 stop to the 5D here. 1d is faster and the AF is quicker to lock (IMO and the 1D4 has the more powerful battery which can push the AF) but once the 5D locks it is just as good. A 3rd party grip for the 5D will help if you need it.

If there is a chance you will do landscapes or people and portraits then get the 5D.
