I thought I'd share (and ask for feedback =) ) on my first music video project.

This was shot on a Canon 5D3 and 6D using the Sigma 35 and 85 combo. Using 128gb 1000x Komputerbay CF and 128gb Sandisk Extreme (45mb/s) SDXC.

My workflow was: Import > RAWMagic 1.0 > DaVinci Resolve 9.1.6 (to create proxies) > Edit in Premiere Pro CS6 > Grade in Resolve > Titles and USM in PP > Export

I don't know how much MLRaw discussion there is here, but feel free to ask me questions - I learned a ton in this process! Was a time crunch shoot/edit - 15 hours from set prep to final export.

Very interesting. Thanks for the workflow info. I just started running ML on my 5D3, but haven't explored RAW yet.

Ah, forgot to mention I was shooting in 720p and conformed to 1080p in Resolve. A full take of 3.5 minutes was ~8.2gb

I like the quality of the footage although it seemed to lack a bit of bite.

I quite liked the video (aside the dry ice which was annoying) and a clever concept. It just took too long to get there, I was majorly bored and wanted more before the change. It needed more generally.

It's good to learn new techniques and workflow, and RAW video on the 5D3 is certainly very exciting. Why did you shoot in 720p?

For the video itself though, its simply very boring. The style of video and edits are very good, but without more variety its really hard to watch until the end. As a director, we need to make sure the overall creative impact of our work is strong, and this doesn't get there.

Thanks guys! Definitely agree. My Komputerbay card hiccuped at 1080p24 so I went down to 720. Also, the 6D and card were not capable of shooting at 1080.

Going to take more time to flesh a concept out for the next one! Time-limited here led me to an idea that may have been overly simplistic.

Appreciate the feedback!

.....

"We go for a close up of girl and balloons. And then, we go to a wide shot and it turns out she's on top of a building." obviously ain't filling 4½ minutes, which ever way you look at it. ;)

You might have got more mileage if you had done more with the balloons to start off with, and then gone to the top of a building and the top of a mountain and a cliff top. Still pushing it for 4½ minutes but you might have stood more of a chance.

I don't know but, while I appreciate RAW will give greater dynamic range, I would have thought this would be significantly off set by the lower resolution. It would be interesting to compare 720 RAW with 1080 compressed and see what you gain or loose between the two. Particularly in an environment where you have total control of the lighting, I'm not sure there would be much advantage in RAW?

Ah, I did it also in as an exercise to understand the power of color grading with raw footage. I would say sharpness of 720p RAW vs 1080p compressed is leaps and bounds apart. But I have no stills to compare the facts to.

In retrospect (to the idea of a mountain), I do wish I would have done more haha. For the next one though I shall take the thoughts further. The video was made for the singing competition and I hadn't put enough thought into telling a real story (just making a fancy background lol). Lessons learned though!
