I just sold the 5dc. The 40d usb port is broken, and I can't tether. I'm not going to spend $300 to fix a $250 camera either. So... I will be upgrading to something. I hope I don't end up with seller's remorse on the 5dc.

People are now trying to get the same price for 5D2s as the 6D, but when the 6D first hit the stores and people were raving about it, 5D2s were several hundred cheaper. :)

....and since the 70D was released 7D's have dropped $200 - $300.

  • The 7D2 will retail so high that the 7D will retain its value for quite some time until the 7D2 comes down in price a few months after its release.
  • You don't sell an older body immediately upon the news or release of a new body, that is the worst time to sell. Cameras tend to drop quickly initiallly, then settle back up a bit after the dust settles. This has happened many, many times.

Your first two points seem to contradict one another, though I suspect both are true to some degree. Case in point: the price of the 60D. Right before the 70D started shipping, new 60Ds dropped to $700 new. After the 70D started shipping, the prices of used 60Ds dropped like a rock since so many wanted to sell theirs to upgrade. I would guess after Christmas, the used 60Ds will regain some of their value, but time will tell.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the used 7D prices drop when (and if) the 7D II starts shipping even if the initial price is extraordinarily high. Lots of 7D owners have been waiting for a while and want to upgrade. Supply and demand will control the prices. It always does.

I admit this is speculation on my part. ;)

i highly doubt it would cost $300 to fix that...

i can't think of any instances where used camera values went down, and then back up...they only go down...

Dre,

So there is no upward fluctuation on used bodies.... ever? I'm asking out of ignorance. I would guess that as the supply dwindles, the price would go up slightly... I'm not suggesting hundreds of dollars but an increase, nonetheless. But as I said, I am guessing.

Right now, I've seen 60D owners taking pretty low sums for their cameras along with the grip and some extras..... just so they have some upgrade cash. I expect this to slow down some and the 60D prices to stabilize.

Am I just hoping? That could be it.

Incorrect... even before the 70D was announced, the 7Ds were around $925-950. Including the announcement and then the release, the 7Ds have dropped about $150.

A handful of times this has happened. The 1D4 went down, then went up, then back down again, the 5D2 fell to $1200-1300, and now sells around $1400-1500 in some cases. I watch the used market 5 out of 7 days each week on 3 boards. ;)

I remember 5DIIs being in the sub $1300 range. Now they're back up to around $1500-1600 used for a good condition one.

meh...i don't really see that after a quick search in the marketplace...i see a lot of people asking for $1500, and none of those are getting any action...it looks like the only ones that have been sold were priced in the $1300 range, and that's assuming they didn't sell for less than asking...

with a brand new 6D at B&H for $1575...i think someone would be pretty crazy to pay $1500 for a used 5DII

i may have been wrong with the other bodies coming back up in price...but personally i don't see the 60D ever selling for a range that is more than it is now

Most of the time the forums are about newer is better. IMO if it's your first camera you can't go wrong with either. Buy what fits your budget and needs. Im going to assume your an ameture like a lot of us, this means the camera is more advanced that we are. In the end what makes a great picture isn't the gear it's the person behind the camera. IMO I'd rather get a ff body instead of a crop sensor. In the end you will want to go that route. I wish I learned that earlier. After 4 crop bodies I finally got a used 5d mark 2 and I wish I did it from the start. Good luck.

This is not true for many people.
Wildlife hobbyists typically do not want to pay $6000-$12000 for a lens to shoot birds with.
However a similar FOV and pixels on target can be achieved with a crop body and a 400mm lens.

If I had $20,000 to blow on a single hobby purchase I would get a 1dx (full frame) and a 600 f4 IS2 but that isnt happening.
For types of photography that do not require long focal lengths your statement seems true.

And a crop body with a $10000 lens is going to get more pixels on that bird.

I just got the 70D. Incredible camera. I used to think Live View and swivel screens were more like a gimmick, but I find myself using it all the time on this camera. The servo focus actual works better than I expected. I have had a 7D and 1D body.
