flip and touch screen make the 70D a marginal winner (7D holds it's own with the joystick). That said, I'de get the 60D before either, and use the price savings on glass.

You mentioned that this is your first camera... I'd certainly not recommend 7D. Even 70D might be "too much camera", but would have more support for a new user. Actually, for a "first camera" or "first DSLR", I might recommend 700D/T5i, 650D/T4i or 600D/T3i instead. (It will always be possible to upgrade later.) 7D is a harder camera to learn to use really well, but there is a lot more support available in books and online, than there was four years ago when Canon first introduced it.

TBH, this will cause a lot of protest, but I shot with Rebels, 30D, 7D and 5D2 and it's actually pretty much the same. The control layout's are pretty similar and when put on manual it's actually pretty much a case of: Set Iso, Diafragma and set shutterspeed, focus and "click" => Yes there's more to it, but this is what it boils down to with every dSLR. With reading and a lot of testing you will learn.

There are of course a few settings that you want to set like the control layout, or modes of AF depending on the situation (depends on everyones preference) but that's also true for the old 30D (and thus the 70D).

Yes, there are differences, but I just don't see a rebel as significantly less complex than a 7D. I'd say a good idea, a sharp eye and spatial awareness is much more important than the controls of these camera's.

Does any one know the best books for using and maintaining the Canon 7D?

I can pretty much figure out a lot of stuff, though tutorials and books would be a great help!!

Give YouTube a look at also, lots of 7D info and how to's you may find interesting until your up to speed with your new 7D

The 7D has the follow significant advantages (IMHO -- I know there may be more). If these are important to you, go with the 7D. Otherwise, I'd choose the 70D

  • Better Controls -- You can adjust your settings quicker and more easily.
  • Better AF system -- This is important for any fast moving shooting situation (e.g., sports, young children).

If those features aren't important to you (or if other attributes of the 70D are more important, e.g., price, flip-out LCD screen, low light performance) I'd go with the 70D.

That said, I still am very happy with my 7D and will not disturb the small pile of money, that I have been adding to each month, labeled 5DIII and 24-70II.

I am just waiting on my pay to buy either the 15-85mm first or the 7D and ship it to my bro in the states to bring them down with out the SELFISH 38% VAT & DUTY!!

Er, I think you'll find that discussion of illegal acts, like smuggling, is frowned upon on this forum.

I want the full frame cameras too, only i will buy lenses before that, lenses that will be great on what ever other canon I buy, the EF 70-200mm L IS II and the EF 8-15mm f4 L

Funny you should mention that. After posting, I was just considering what lens will replace my current Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8. I was thinking Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II, but the EF 8-15mm f4 L would be a good choice too.
