If it were me and I was gna spend the $1300 on a 7d, I would just spend a little more and pick up the 6d. You don't realize how much better a full frame camera is until you're using your crop sensor and realize how inadequate it can be in certain situations.

Let's not go there, and this has nothing to do with this thread. Here is one of the more recent threads of about 10,000 APS-C vs FF threads, I think your reply would really fit in that thread.

not everyone wants a full frame sensor...for something like Birds in flight...which would you rather have a 6D, or a 7D?

Can anyone tell me if the 70D's ACCURACY for focusing with a single centre point is as reliable as a 7D's? I currently shoot with a 50D and its absolutely dreadful. I don't use any modes for photography, all of my shooting is always done with the centre point, I then hold the shutter release and frame the photo before taking the photo.

That said, between the 70D and the 7D, which one has an edge, and would I notice any difference coming from a 50D?

I'm leaning towards the 70D, I've found myself shooting a lot of video for work for certain events and I've been forced to use manual focus with the 5D Mark III when rented and I only recently found out the 70D has autofocus!

Any advice? Thanks! :)

stop doing focus recompose...choose the point closest to what you want to be in focus...

If you shoot video, choose the 70D. If you plan to throw your camera off a mountain and still expect it to work, choose the 7D. Besides this they are about the same camera with tiny differences here and there.

This begs the question, what feature(s) do you find so indispensable on the 7D? I was considering the 70D primarily for the AF, which the 7D probably does better. I am leaning towards the 70D because it is newer, and the controls more closely match my 60D.

What makes you say the 7D AF is better than the 70D. All I am reading seems to suggest that the 70D AF is dramatically better. IMHO auto focus ability in a camera is one of the most important criteria, and a picture that is in focus from an inferior camera will always be sharper and clearer than a more expensive camera that has a much better sensor with much better high ISO abilities. I would be very disappointed if Canon did not use the technology it has with AF on its newer cameras. The Canon 5DIII has an incredible AF system that is quite dated by today's standards, and it should be the lowest common denominator on all AF setups for the newer cameras. The physical cost of enabling a good AF system on a new camera is negligible as the major cost is in the R&D and not in materials used. It would be a shame if Canon is purposefully crippling its newer cameras by not using a good AF system.

It is important to pick up and handle the cameras before making a decision. When I got my latest camera, a 60D, I went to the store with the aim of getting a 7D. After handling both cameras, I found that I preferred the size, weight, and ergonomics of the 60D. I had a T2i as well.
The 7D is complicated and will take some time to learn to use. The 60D is my 3rd digital SLR, and I shot 35 mm film since 1978. I started on a canon rangefinder and quickly moved to SLRs. I preferred the ergonomics and ease of use of the 60D for my uses. My hand size is medium. If I had jumbo hands, I would probably like a bigger camera.
The 7D is a sophisticated camera. You will want to use the center focus capability of it for wildlife photography. Try and figure out how to set center point AF on a 7D without the manual...

For live view / video, not for normal viewfinder still-photo (PDAF) use. The 7D is still dramatically better for action shots through the viewfinder, due to its wealth of focus point and tracking options.

You couldn't get that look from your 550D, or somebody else with a 7D? Also, in-camera JPGs, or from raw? Just curious, because back to back comparisons just don't show measurable differences that should "blow" someone away between the 70D and the prior 18mpx offerings.

JPEG. and no, i have used 550D for 2 years now and i know its limits and capabilities. i shot several matches in Zavrč (place in those pictures) at the same hour and conditions and no, definitely not. 550D doesnt come close. especially considering that no extensive PP was done here besides crop and +4 to +7 purple tint, as they tend to go a bit greenish on that field.

but i find your disbelieve in 70D's capabilities (especially ISO) and constant defending of the 7D amusing. carry on
