1DX AF issues

Hi,

I just bought a 1DX and I can't get the camera to focus. I've tried everything in every mode with every lens I own and this thing just won't focus. I also have small black pieces of something in my viewfinder and I know for a fact I did not change lenses outdoors or anywhere where this amount of dirt could get in it.

Has anyone else had AF issues with a new 1DX? I never had this issue with my 5DMIII.

Gold

if it doesn't a/f at all then it's possible it's set to use one of the back buttons for focussing...

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

Was it new straight out of the box or a second hand model? There definitely shouldn't be any issues if it was brand new out of the box. Coupled with the black objects in the viewfinder, if it's brand new, I'd be taking it straight back to the shop and asking for another one.

If it's second hand, never hand over any money before inspecting it fully and doing some test shots.

I would exchange it, myself. If it was brand new and had dust issues and won't focus... Back it goes.

Brand new right out of the box the new 1DX was defective with oil splash in the viewfinder. I just Googled this and it seems a lot of people are getting defective Canon 1DX's that won't focus. How does Canon sell a $7,000 camera body that's defective? It's says that Canon knows about the issue but still sells the cameras! So if one of these cameras has a mark that shows it's been fixed by Canon no matter what you're really getting a refurb. It's not NEW off the line perfect. A new 1DX is now given a "fix" and sent out to consumers but the defective parts are still there. This is CRAZY

I suggest that you take it back to your supplier and get a new replacement

Agreed, never had an issue with anything on the camera.

The service announcement (with along with serial number series and markers in the battery compartment) indicated that you may not see the symptoms but that those units that were in the suspect range may over time exhibit less precise initial AF lock and quick transition to another focus point.
I bought the two I had that fell into that serial number range and marker id's about 9 months ago. Neither of those two rigs exhibited the symptoms after around 120k and 185k clicks. My other 1DX's were not in the suspect range and didn't exhibit the symptoms either. All of them were able to AF in any of the 6 default AF cases and all of them were able to AF correctly in any of the 6 AF cases even when I modified any of the parameters within each of the 6 AF cases.
So I took my two that were within the recall range to Irvine and both were probably flashed with new AF code instructions (my guess as a 45 year IT coding and hardware geek) maybe some hardware tweak as well and neither has exhibited any issues in any of the AF case configuration testing ...just as before the update and servicing.
I swap lenses often depending on the job; sometimes in crappy conditions...never had any dust etc. issues. I scope each body after a job before I put it away in the Pelican cases and so far have only had to take a rocket blower to one of them after a job. The built in shaking has done it's job so far.
Every rig I have had I setup for "back button focusing" right out of the box. And that's my default preferred method of shooting unless I have to do a focus/re-compose.
Just my experience so far.
Maybe I'm just lucky with my rigs.

Lotsa stuff, running outta room and a wife...I keep looking at her and wondering???

I have had mine practically rebuilt, fortunately, all under warranty. The autofocus would severely front focus at random times while tracking and then I would get one or two in focus and then the rest would be just soft. CPS was great, but it went back about 3 times in less than 2 months. They were good enough to give me a loaner! Then the camera just died at the state soccer finals! Waiting to see what the new mirrorless looks like or the 1dxiii!

Nice to see new replies to a 7 year old thread! Yes the 1dx3 seems very cool.
