Wyoming Thunderstorm (external link) by Kurt Lawson (external link), on Flickr

While driving along US 16 / 14 on my way west to the east entrance to Yellowstone National Park, I drove through this crazy thunderstorm. The backlight of the late afternoon sun revealed bizarre patterns in the clouds, such as this bluish swirling area. Either the clouds there were thinner in the turbulence or the turbulent clouds allowed sunlight to refract through the storm. At any rate the central area here was moving and swirling rapidly as waves of rain fell below. I have never seen anything like this storm in person before. This was just east of Cody, Wyoming. No vignetting or dodging and burning added, just -.64 stop grad on the sky above the ground.

Amazing cloud formation. Not sure if it's my monitor here at the office, but the foreground could probably use a little boost in exposure to balance it with the clouds.

As soon as the pic popped up, I could see a giant ram's head in the formation. Very nicely done.

Awesome shot. Thanks for sharing. I think I'd have that one printed and hanging on a wall.

Awesome picture... proverbial "right place at the right time..." Kinda reminds me of the storm scene in "Close Encounters of a Third Kind" right before the aliens come out of the boiling clouds and abduct the boy... I probably would have turned around and high-tailed it the other way... ;)

p.s. Was the lens you used your Canon 24-105mm?
