I'm looking for some advice on creating a kit for location and outdoors portrait and fashion (perhaps the occasional wedding).

The three lights I have are: 2 x 580 EX II and 1 x 420 EX (plus an ST-E2 transmitter).

These are the three most common scenarios for me:

  1. Outdoors fill in flash on camera: A single flash positioned on the camera.
  2. Outdoors fill flash off camera: A single light off camera on a stand.
  3. Indoors multiple flashes off camera: A key light, a fill light, and a hair light.

For 1, I was thinking of acquiring a LumiQuest SoftBox III (external link). Will this work well for my purpose? It also comes in a portrait kit (external link) that gives me gels and a snoot.

For 2, I have many options but it mostly boils down to umbrella vs softbox. Due to umbrellas' propensity to fly on windy days, I was veering more towards a portable softbox of some kind on a stand that can be weighed down or sandbagged. This 24"x24" Chinese soft box (external link) appears to be a good and inexpensive option. Or would this Octobox (external link) be better? Any thoughts on this?

For 3, I will have to add two more stands, and perhaps an umbrella (the snoot is already included in the portrait kit. Ideally I'd like to add a honey comb as well down the road). I was considering this cheap kit (external link).

I appreciate your feedback.

Thanks for your input, Talley. For #1, my thinking is that straight flash might be too harsh even as fill-in. For #2, I mean a second key light (after the obvious one, sunlight).

I am in the same boat as you in regards to needing some budget friendly light modifiers and stands for Speedlites. Below are some link to equipment that I purchased after doing a bit of looking around. I'm sure it's not the best quality but it'll do to get started. All of the components at this price point look very similar so I'd assume that the ones you see on Amazon, B&H and Adorama are all the same.

This softbox kit looks identical to the one you linked to and includes a stand.

Stands and umbrellas. Note that these are convertible umbrellas.

I dunno other than an umbrella I don't like any of the softbox ideas for a speedlight.

I just did an outdoor shoot with my 600EX RT and a softbox similar to this. Struggles trying to shoot when sun is behind the subject but when they are shade it works well. You can't beet a strobe for power but in a pinch.
