mrterrible,

Hello there, and welcome to the world of Club photography. I am one of the few Detroit photographers that works in all the nighclubs, music festivals, concerts, events, lounges on a regular basis. My photos are currently in pubkication from the Detroit area in REAL Detroit, ClubPlanet.com, Six Degrees Magazine, and a few others advertisements.

I know the Detroit market very well, since I am shooting in it just about every weeeknd. I know where APT is since I shoot at Bleu just down the block verry often and all the other clubs in the area, Volume, Centre Street, Oslo (right next to APT), etc.

Here is a few suggestions:

1. Use Longer exposures
2. Boost your ISO to 400-800
3. Get a flash unit, I have the 580EX
4.. get a faster lens, and or higher qaulity
5. Use AV mode some

One last Suggestions: A Superbowl party is not the best place to practice and try all your new stuff out. It will be higher class clientel, celebrities, and packed.

Please take a look at my website and email me if you have any questions since I would not mind helping a another local guy out .:)

I usually set my 20D on M, put a Lumiquest softbox on my 580, set shutter to about 1/160 and add 1.3-2 stops of FEC. Generally I use my 24-70 and set aperature to f/5.6. I took these:

with a 24 f2.8. Here's I didn't need to worry about getting the ambient lighting many shows require, which takes a big aperture and slow shutter.

:D :D
Hey Eric! I'd like to go along with you some night just for the H of it. I did some shots at The Raven years ago, but the mirror slap from the Bronica was a bit too much! ;)

I was shooting, with stage lighting, at an ISO of 1600 last weekend, and I was stunned with the results. No noise to speak of, and I didn't need the flash:

Kick the ISO up a bit and see what happens.

Indeed, and also the very good high ISO performance of the 20D.

You want a fast prime, for the type of shots you're after there's nothing better.

These two shots were taken with a 50mm 1.4 and the 20D built in flash

I don't know what good composition is.... Sometimes for me composition has to do with a certain brightness or a certain coming to restness and other times it has to do with funny mistakes. There's a kind of rightness and wrongness and sometimes I like rightness and sometimes I like wrongness. Diane Arbus

Yep.

I should also point out that the lens I used for the above shots wasn't one of the f/1.8's, but the 70-200mm f/2.8...

Night clubs have pretty tough lighting to deal with, often the lightings not up to that of gigs, not by a long way. You can still get plenty of available light shots, and use flash when you have to.

But you want a fast lens for sure
