Here are a few images from our midnight run to Mount Baker last Friday night/Saturday morning.

We left home at 12am, got to the trail head at 2:30am, and made it to the vicinity of our destination around 4:30. As my hiking partner was feeling a bit winded, I left him to rest and headed out to find our target; a small series of tarns located on a plateau. After about a half hour or so, I finally spotted a couple faint reflections about 1/4 mile off the trail. I switched off my headlamp and sat down for a few minutes to let my eyes adjust to the moonless night. A few minutes later, with my night vision kicking in, the reflections started to become more visible and I was reasonable sure that I had located the tarns.

After confirming the location of the tarns I jogged back to my buddy, picked him up, and then we hiked the 3/4 of a mile back to our shooting location. We ended up making it to the tarns about 5:45am which was perfect; just enough time to do a little scouting prior to the sunrise.

Here is what I have processed so far,

enjoy.

This is the essentially the image I set out to get (sans clouds)after having done my initial pictorial research on the location.

While I think that the majority of people may prefer the prior picture, this picture is bar none my favorite image of the trip. I have been focusing a lot of my learning on composition lately and feel that this image most accurately represents what I was trying to capture and the feeling that I was trying to convey while taking the image. I am particularly interested in hearing peoples thoughts on this image.

Touchdown

This last one was just a fun image; I liked the little curve in the drainage. I experimented with some orton on this one and am not overly excited about the result, but not feeling motivated enough to reprocess it either.

They're all really beautiful - well done first off! Great job planning and scouting, nothing like seeing someone's hard work and vision pay off. Critique wise, I know you're fond of the second, I think I like the first the most. The tree speaks to me - how many inches of snow it's been buried with, and how many wanderers have walked the lonely trails past it. I like to think your photograph does that tree some justice. Beautiful set, and thanks for sharing!

Thanks for thoughts. I am not sure how much snow that is; however, I can speak to what lies beyond and verify that it is frequented. The trail to this location continues on to base camp and then to the summit of Baker via its southern face. As we approached our location and Baker became identifiable, we could see quite a few headlamps from those summiting that morning.

Nice set of images and I really like the first one. To me, the trees do it for me.

More great shots as usual Robert. I like the composition on the first one most, but all are excellent.

Beautiful. The first shot doesn't look real. Amazing place.

Awesome work Robert! The first image wins it for me. I have this area of Park Butte on my list as well, hopefully I can hit it before it's socked with snow.

Rick, I was just thinking about you today. I got a big bolded FU reply from my regular hiking partner when I suggested we through hike the enchantments before Nov 15th. He is holding out in hopes that there will not be any snow when permit season ends, but I don't want to leave this years opportunity to photograph them to fate.

I will do the hike solo if need be but it would be nice to have a partner just in case I sprain am ankle coming down Aasgard or something. If you interested in catching sunset or sunrise there before the permit season ends let me know.

That's a hell yes, I've always wanted to go to the enchantments. Do you know when do the larches peak in color? I'll be shooting down in Cali for half of October though so just let me know and I'll see what I can swing.
