Beautiful capture of the sun. Image looks heavily cropped to me. Maybe a bit of noise reduction would soften the look?

Who cares? The heavy blue at the bottom balances the larger, lighter colored area at the top. Visual balance in this image is more important than any rule, which isn't really a rule anyway, but a guideline. Or maybe even a suggestion, at best.

Thank you! I cropped it just a little bit; Tinypic resized and compressed it, so that's why it looks a bit grainy. The full image was taken at 200 ISO with my old 1000D at the time. The image had some areas that were too dark, so playing with the exposure might have produced some extra noise.

@Denny G: I'm familiar with that, but for the sake of this image, this seemed to be the more logical framing.

and the rule of thirds is meant to teach people to not shoot with the horizon in the middle of the shot. it's not meant to teach people to shoot every single horizon on one of the "thirds" lines. also, there are instances where the 50/50 horizon works too.
