I was fortunate to be able to attend a photo workshop last week up in Monument Valley - and the timing included a semi-rare event: the "Mitten Shadow", where the shadow of West Mitten falls on East Mitten just at sunset. These occur twice a year (September & March) and last perhaps 3-4 days before the shadow is off to the side. The hardest part is getting a day where it's clear to the West with nice clouds to the East.

Of course, Monument Valley is an amazing place, even without a special event..:)

And lest we forget, people live there, too..

Nice series. I was there on Friday the 13th. Beautiful day until the sun went behind clouds minutes before the shadow was in place. Fortunately, it found a narrow slit that gave us a few minutes of shadow.

The shadow picture above was from Thursday (Wednesday got skunked) but you are right - Friday was even better, for exactly 2 minutes - start-to-finish! I'm still working on the ones from Friday, got a somewhat different view.
I couldn't believe the folks who wandered off when the sun went behind that big cloud - and missed it.;-)a

This was from the period when the sun was "out" on the mittens:

What glorious clouds!

I'd be happy to..:-)

Monument Valley is a big place, with lots to look at and photograph. This view is fro almost the same spot as the shadow picture, but looking Southwest:

And let's not leave out the inhabitants:

A view of West Mitten and the Castle, earlier in the afternoon while the clouds were playing games with light and shadow:

The workshop was with Southwest Perspectives (external link) - a great pair and lots of fun as well as great teachers.
