Today (tonight) marks one year since I found that fatal car accident on my way home. The 'instant replay' is clear as ever. I so often hear people describe events as being a blur, dreamlike, fuzzy, etc. Not for me. In my experience, adrenaline = high definition clarity.

It's definitely something I won't forget for a long, long time. Particularly since I drive by the location constantly, since it's only 4 kms from my house.

I remember years ago, it was the year 1999/2000 and we spent it camping at Ayers Rock/Uluru (i.e. The big monolith) for New Years. We left a couple of days later, while driving we saw a 4x4 on its roof on the side of the road with camping gear, esky, etc strewn everywhere with police on the scene- That's not how anyone would want to end a holiday and I can still see that scene quite clearly.

Accidents like those don't create blurs and bits and pieces, they create a full on HD version of the accident. I still deal with this some 25 years later. I left Michigan, but when I go back I can still detail every intersection and accident we responded to. I don't have a lot of happy memories of that period of my life.

Speaking of Camping trips and BIF:

This one wasn't but if I had got it, then that would have made me v. happy.

My wife works with the Ambulance service to help get 'Ambos' back on road from both physical and mental injuries. At any one time up to 20% of the Ambos are of work injured. PTSD is very common especially when they deal with young kids and suicides and suicide attempts are unfortunately not uncommon.

I've always admired those who take the broken and piece them back together. It takes a special kind of person to do that. I'm not one of them. It might sound horrible but I enjoyed EMS in part because we made an immediate difference, but didn't have to deal with what happens the next day/week/month/year to the person. We would visit them in hospital on rare occasions if they made a certain impact on us, but like I said, those were rare occasions.

It's easy to see how/why first responders are so prone to PTSD and burn out. I have not yet had to deal with a self-injury or really tragic scenario. A lot of folks would consider the accident I found to be really tragic and horrific and all that, but I simply don't. They were very drunk, they were driving, they had a habit of driving really fast on a gravel road in a front wheel drive car. They were literally handing their lives over to fate and consequence. It is sad for the friends and family that were left behind, and depending on how much the survivor remembers, possibly rather haunting memories.
But for me, I remember every detail, and I am comfortable with the fact that I knew immediately that there was no helping the driver. He did have a fading "heartbeat", but the body does not last long with the brain partially on the outside. And I know dead eyes when I see them.

If they had caused injury to someone else, hit another car or the like, the story would be different.

That's a very admirable job position. Not an easy one I imagine, but I'm sure she loves helping the helpers.

Trevor, your fat orb weaver isn't fat. She's full of eggs. They make egg sacs at this time of year, and the babies hatch out next spring.

This one settled outside our back door when ready to lay.

After she produced eggs and left, I collected the egg sac. I took it apart and counted the eggs. There were more than 1000.

I remember once when I was much younger killing a spider on my bedroom floor and hundreds of tiny spiders crawled everywhere. That was unexpected and just a little freaky.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

It's OK, she probably ate their daddy. Justice had to be done.

Daddy was cheating and probably deserved it.
