When I'm looking to upgrade, I get the camera in my hands to see how it feels. Then I rattle off some images, become very impressed or very disappointed (rarely). You can decide you don't like it. I passed on the 1Dx. Too much camera for me.
Or if you want to wait, I'd pass on the 7D Mark III and wait for the Mark IV. It's rumored to have dual flux capacitors.
As for the 5D IV, I have it, I love it. I haven't had a lot of time with it yet. That whole life and work thing is keeping me pretty busy right now, but when I do make some time to shoot, it really is a stellar camera.
Awesome, with dual flux capacitors I can never miss a shot, I'll be able to micro adjust time and get the shots 2 more times.

Sell your wife and kids and buy the 5DIV and a 100-400mm f2.8
Hope that helped!
I kind of need the wife as she is in my retirement plan, ie. She keeps working and I retire.

I have been looking to upgrade my 100-400 v1 for some time and have been looking at the 150-600s however, I got to play with a Nikon P900 over the weekend and I got to say, I was quite impressed. At 600mm the IQ is really good and even at the max, 2000mm it impresses. The only drawback is no raw.

Anyway, for the cost of a lens I can get a 2000mm camera.
Never heard of it, I'll check it out.
If I were to get the 500, I would use it with a 1.4x extender which they say works well with FF. SO 700 f/5.6 is nothing to sneeze at. Only problem is I need to convince myself it's worth all that expense, and that I cant bring myself to YET.
