I still have a 4meg SD card I got with one of my first digital cameras. It was an old JVC if I remember.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

It is always a great time when you get a bunch of people volunteering for this event. This was my fourth year doing it. Some of the people are so grateful to be able to get a photo of themselves, some for a keepsake, some send it to family they have not seen in ages. I was blown away the first year listening to some of the stories people have as to why they are in a poor situation, and it is always heartwarming to get their appreciation for providing a photo for them.

One guy that I shot this year looked at the finished photo when it was handed to him, and got a beaming smile on his face and said "No way! That's me?" The was black, and had a couple pink scars on one side of his face from being cut while mugged, and I shot him in a semi-profile pose, and you can just barely see the edge of one mark on the far side of his face. He said he always sees the scars in the mirror, and that they were a constant reminder of the event. Plus, I can usually eke a good smile outta people. :)

I would highly recommend anyone here getting involved. It really is a great thing that we can use our resources and knowledge to provide such a great service to someone who otherwise would not be able to have their photo taken.

Was your friend involved? If so, I imagine I would know who it is. There were two girls here who started it in Calgary, and did everything the first year. The following 4 years now (which I have been involved with) it has expanded, and we have around 40 or so volunteers. Hair and makeup requires lots of people, plus there are lots of general duties, like running cards from the photogs to the editing people. Oh yeah, there are folks set up doing editing too. :)

Check out the Help-Portrait main site to get an idea of what goes on.

you just turn up with your camera, and other volunteers bring lights, backdrops etc?

He was shooting right beside us.

In my case this is pretty much it. I can set up with strobes if I need, but only have a handful of flashes, a few Pocket Wizards, umbrellas and stands, but no studio lights which are preferred, and no backdrop. What we do is set up two shooters per station, get all the gear set up, and then just swap out the flash trigger when we shoot.

We have gone to using white backdrops to help speed up the photo printing. This year it was going great with 2 Espon printers, until one hiccuped for an hour or so putting us further behind.

Here is a shot of my daughter and me at the event. She has been a general volunteer for 3 years now, and a great help.
