10 day kill, that was some bad cooking.

Responded to a house fire today. Call came in about 10:15 am for a fully engulfed structure fire, half way across town from the hall. (Small town, 5000 people) Three departments called in.
Our guys were there quite quickly. Two entered through the front door, headed to the kitchen at the back of the house. About 10 feet in, the floor collapsed under them. Wally ended up in the basement, Steadman managed to not go right down. Mayday called. RIT team was in place in front of the house. They put a folding attic ladder down to him and he was able to crawl/climb out, was sent straight to the hospital. He's been released and cleared of injuries (I imagine he's pretty bruised).
The whole kitchen and most of the living room fell into the basement. Fire was put out before it got through the roof. Single story with full basement. The Camaro in the garage was unharmed.
The cause of the fire is not good for some people. A company was there installing a water heater in the basement. They were drilling a hole through the brick from the outside and caught the floor joists on fire. It looks like it was fairly extensive before they noticed. And since it was the floor joists that burned first, the floor had no strength left.
I didn't know who the homeowners were, until their son showed up. I used to work with him.
Everyone got out in time. The prized car was ok. A cabinet full of important documents, family heirlooms, and jewelry were saved.
Happy the Camaro survived. More happy everyone was ok. Can't be nice to have the floor collapse from underneath your feet.
