Yea, me too. Taking x-rays of those back teeth is a real challenge especially with those digital x-ray machines. It's like the dentist is trying to cram a 1D back there.

Totally true story...I have had dentists ask me to never come back. They do have better methods of sedation now though where you don't remember anything, which is better than the happy gas. Now I only get happy gas for cleanings.

I have an extremely severe gag reflex whenever a dentist puts anything in my mouth, any dental tool or especially an xray.

Decades ago I had a dentist put in a rubber wedge device to keep my mouth open when he worked in my mouth, and he kept it there when he walked out of the room.

He did this so many times I came to HATE it, but at that time I did not gag. But I sure do now. vmad

Yea, my dentist has that as well. I just tell him I'll keep my mouth open and he's good with that. He's pretty accommodating.

x-rays were the worst..shove that thing in and "bite down". I still cringe when I think about it. Any dental instrument that simply touches my tongue triggers it, but then holding my mouth "open...open...wider..." will do it too. I had a dentist give me valium to take half an hour before my appointment and sit in the waiting room. He might as well have given me an m&m. I never had the rubber wedge, but I did see them on the tray. Now with the jaw spreader and the dental dams, that just adds a new dimension to it. Good times...good times. I am blessed that they came up with the sedation...my dental experience is at about a 3 on the 1 to 10 scale. :-)

I've never had the giggly gas. When I had my wisdom teeth out they knocked me out, then they had a hard time waking me up.
For any fillings that I've had, they've just frozen my mouth. At one point we discovered that I can only have one spot frozen at a time. I needed two fillings done, top and bottom on the right side. Dentist decided to do both at the same time. With both top and bottom frozen, my jaw muscles cramped up really bad and I couldn't open my mouth. Hurt like crazy.

The x-ray film thing always gets me, gag pretty bad with that.

I've had that wedge thing used before, didn't really mind it much.

The rubber barrier thing though, that's torture! It's nice that stuff isn't falling down your throat, but they always end up with the loose edge of the thing sitting on my nose. Trying not to gag, breathing through your nose, and then that thing blocks off a nostril.

I think it's an even trade for me. If something hit my tongue while they were drilling that made me gag. The dental dam is a little better in that sub-consciously I know it won't fall back, but it's still triggering my panic mode. My dentist is an amazing guy with a great understanding of chair anxiety, and he will make even the worst person (me) comfortable by putting me out. I think it makes his life easier too.

I just want my face pain to go away. The pain gets pretty excruciating. He (the dentist) seemed annoyed when i called to tell him yesterday (don't give it your cheek number then). He sent a script in for an antibiotic. I guess he feels it may be an infection. Went to church today and was holding my face almost the whole time. Sure that looked good to the folks watching me in the front row.

Loaded up on ibuprofen when i got home and have been using an ice pack. Just want the pain to subside.

I think it started when the first dentist put too much clay in the cage (I had a tooth knocked out). After telling me to bite down, the clay squished into the back of my throat. I projectile vomited on him. Poor guy!
I've had a severe gag reflex ever since. Sometimes even while brushing my teeth!

I found a dentist that doesn't use film. Don't know what it's called. No more gagging during xrays!

It's my life and I'll get pissed if I want to.

Do any of you spit on your dentist? Seems my salvation glans go hyper when I have to hold my mouth open. I didn't know they could squirt so forcefully!

My dentist doesn't use film. I haven't seen anyone use film in ages. It's the sensor, It's bigger than the old film slides ever were.

Same. That part makes the visit a little better.

I still remember when I did a photo gig for a bank some years ago. The days I took portraits of the employees, I can't even count how many of them said being photographed was much worse than going to the dentist. At least they didn't gag on me
