Happy new year.. 2019 is going out with a bang. Yesterday wifey broke her wrist flinging a ducky (external link) for the dogs. I think she just popped or strained a tendon but we shall see Thursday.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

Happy New Year!

I'm hoping 2020 will be a better year than 2019 was. 2019 was.... rough.

Dad is now living in a retirement/assisted living home, and as of today, I own the house.

I'm snowplowing for the winter, so it had better be a snowy winter! I applied to a job posting for a company that I knew of, but knew nothing about. Did a group interview - that was rather interesting. Then was called back for a private interview, and a few days later was offered a position and scheduled for a group training day. Before that training day happened, we got freezing rain and they called me in to work. Previous experience and good references paid off, I was sent out to use equipment that we're supposed to have been trained on first.

This company, as I've found out, is very invested in training, safety, presentation, and quality work. Safety boots and high visibility clothing are required at all times. Everyone watches SIMA training videos, and then goes through training on every kind of equipment that is used, and has to prove their competency before being allowed to use the equipment.

Payloaders are fun. :)

The scheduling plan is that for ice/light snow events, I will have a F250 truck with plow and 2 ton salter. If the timing of the storm is fairly well nailed down, I will bring the truck home ahead of time. We have the two local VIA train stations that we take care of. The smaller one is just down the tracks from me, in Wyoming. Then there are a couple of contracts in Petrolia, which is just down the road again. So I would start my route out here, and head into the city for the rest of the route.
For snow events, I'm supposed to get a John Deere tractor and go plow bigger locations.
But..... so far I've been doing a different route - the Community Living route. Community Living owns/runs group homes for the disabled. They own houses throughout the city, and some workshops. These are 'zero tolerance' contracts, which means every inch of ice and snow must be cleared, every time. Last year, one of the supervisors ended up having to do the route all the time because they couldn't get anyone else to do the job properly. This year, I've been doing it so far and they are quite happy.
The company hires upwards of 50 people for the winter season, so training everyone takes a lot of time. I had a new guy with me yesterday to train. It's odd, being a new hire, and training other people already. I'll take it as a compliment.
Hopefully we can get some other folks trained up and committed to doing a good job on this route so I can get to the routes that I'm supposed to be doing.

Overall, I'm enjoying working with this company. It's not my primary trade, but seems to be my secondary trade. After the downward spiral that the last job took, it's nice to be with a company that has high standards.

I'll ask here first....

I just acquired a Samsung 6 series tv. I have a Spyder 5 Pro. Do these two items work together?

The TV looks great, but I'm sure there is room for improvement.

I may be very far behind the game in this area, but this is my first flat screen TV. It's just never been a priority to spend money on. Even this one, which was on sale at the grocery store, I used 500,000 PC Points to buy it.

This terrible affair is finally getting much coverage on the UK tv networks, not sure about elsewhere. The stats are truly amazing, and horrifying. Your PM/Govt don't seem to be helping much either. well done to the firefighters, paid and volunteers.

Yeah, he's pretty much a d'head. Huge areas of destruction, without the volunteers it would be so much more devestating. Saturday is going to be a bad day with expected tops in the mid fourties in many places with strong winds. Evacuations happening in many places. Cross fingers things get better.
