Is everyone else as bored as I am in isolation?
Update:
Winter was, well, not very winter-y.
I started out covering snow plowing routes in the city and the one rural route that we have. I quickly became one of the go-to operators for the non-industrial side of the company. Apparently being reliable and a skilled operator is rare and highly valued.
Since our winter sucked, hours were low. The company recognizes that it's hard to keep employees if they aren't getting hours, so they do what they can to keep people working. My supervisor, in a management meeting, suggested that I be sent for the Basic Safety Orientation Plus course. This is an 8 hour course that is required for contractors to be granted access to the various industrial sites in the area. (Places like Imperial Oil Limited, Nova Chemicals, Arlanxeo, Suncor, etc) Along with that course I was sent for the site specific training for Arlanxeo and Cabot Carbon.
Shortly after this was scheduled, my supervisor was kicking herself for making the recommendation because, as she said, "Now the industrial side is going to steal you."
Well, a week later, I was called over to the industrial side. I still filled in for the city routes when I was available.
Moving over to industrial was a great move for me. My new supervisor is the head of the maintenance shop. One day of working in the shop was enough to prove that I know what I'm doing, and my supervisor was given permission to give me all the hours he wanted. I was handed the whole fleet of trucks to take care of, plus anything else that comes up.
Work was going great, and I finally decided that I wanted to stay on with the company, which they had been asking me to do ever since the first interview.
But then......
March 5th I broke my right ankle at volleyball.
Avulsion fracture at the bottom of my fibula. Probably lots of torn soft tissue as well.
Ambulance ride to the ER. X-rays. Temporary cast for 4 days. Appointment with an orthopedic surgeon. Been in a moon boot ever since.
I go back for more x-rays tomorrow. I'm supposed to still be non-weight bearing, but I've been walking on it for over a week now. I'll go barefoot around the house, carefully, while the boot dries out. Hopefully the x-rays will be good and I can drop down to an ankle brace. Not that the ortho surgeon will support that, he told me 3 weeks non-weight bearing, and then another 2-3 weeks partial.
So, I've been off work for three weeks now.
In response to all this virus crap the company has laid off all but the very essential employees for a few weeks. Hopefully I can get unemployment coverage.
My goal is to be able to wear work boots in time to go back when they call.
