Here's a bit of my drive home tonight. About 2 kms worth of side road that had been fairly recently ploughed. This road will fill in completely within hours. (no editing done, the tunes are what was playing)

Drift Bustin' (external link)

What song was that? I liked it.

Looks like a fun drive. While I was in Northern California for Christmas week I headed up to Lake Tahoe one day. I still need to get my car washed after that day trip. After all of the snow, ice, mud, and that black sand-like crap they put on the roads up there for traction, my car isn't even black any more. It's brown. I even got pulled over by a cop because both of my license plates were so gummed up and filthy, they were unreadable. I had to go to the nearest gas station and squeegee them off...

Still haven't washed off the rest of the car, though. Well... As long as I had the squeegee in hand, I did clean the windshield.

I much prefer warm weather. Summer is my favorite season. Lots of swimming, biking, hiking, basically outdoors all day long. Wintertime is for hibernating.

Hiking is ok in the summer, as long as you get high enough in elevation so it isn't so blazing hot. Winter is for hiking in those same mountains - just remember to bring the snowshoes and crampons. ;)

That song is Runaway Train by Brad Paisley.

The sand that's being used this year is quite yellow. Turns all the vehicles a funny shade of brownish yellow instead of the normal salt grey.

Thanks. I'll look that one up on Amazon. I think I still have some free mp3 credits there.

I haven't seen the yellow sand yet. Everywhere I've been for the past couple/few years still uses that black crap we've always used over on this side of the world. They're going to have to use a belt sander to get some of it off my car when I finally get around to taking it to the car wash...

I do a lot more stuff in the summer and I love being outdoors, but it gets so humid here that I have to hibernate in the A/C.

The trick is to get away from the humidity. I am naturally drawn to the American southwest. Hot and dry.

Coming back from Macomb this past weekend I noticed that in Oklahoma. The sand they were using was very yellow.

San Diago is a beautiful place. I could live there easily.

Is San Diago similar to San Diego? Like it's smaller, quieter cousin?

just south of my in-laws and south of watertown but north of Syracuse, it is part of the "snow belt", but because of the insane cold, plus high winds, they are going to get hammered with 3-4" per hour for a number of hours...

A coworker was watching videos of game fishing this morning... marlin, big hammerhead sharks, and so on. The older I get, the more I dislike the idea of killing critters for sport, and seeing them fighting for their lives. Yeah, you can argue it's for food, but I'm pretty sure it's more the "sport" aspect. I've hunted rabbits as a young man, even bagged a deer once in my early 20's. But one was enough; haven't had the desire to kill anything since... well, sometimes ants, scorpions, and black widows when we get too many in the yard. To each his own, and I don't dislike anyone because they hunt or fish; lots of my work buddys do both. And yes, I eat burgers and wear leather shoes and belts, so I'm somewhat of a hypocrite. One of my favorite bumper stickers is, "If God didn't want us to eat animals, He wouldn't have made them out of meat." Maybe I'll turn vegetarian before I die; I hate seeing how food animals are slaughtered, too. There's a thread that shows hunting pictures, and I opened it once. Kinda hated seeing all those beautiful animals dead.

Just my ramble for the day. Fire away.

We have a very modern Morso fireplace insert that seems to do a pretty decent job. When we remodeled the house 3 years ago, we put in high efficiency dual pane windows, and new insulation throughout the house. The laundry room was only place where we didn't do that, and it is the coldest room in the house - at least until the dryer goes on.

Yeah, lots of good inserts out there that provide good efficiency. Triple glazing is the standard around here for energy efficient windows

I love a wood fire. Fireplaces are nice, but I would love to have a woodstove. Heat from all sides and a cooking surface. But I wouldn't want it as the only, or main, source of heat.

I am the same. While the flames are nice, a stove does a way better job of heating in many cases, plus you can heat things on it. ;)

Good news I closed off a strange cold air intake in the basement and replaced the 2 filters which didn't look horrible and the furnace seems much happier.

If that intake is from the outside, it is put in to provide combustion air for the furnace, so that you don't draw combustion air from the house. This is really only critical in a house that has little or no air leakage, but nonetheless is code around here unless you have a high efficient furnace that has its own separate intake and exhaust for combustion.

Jill-of-all-Trades wrote in post #16584161 (external link)
We keep the house warmer, set at 74F. The basement gets really cold otherwise. And Dad has circulation problems, if he gets cold it takes him a very long time to warm up again.

We keep our house at 20°C (68°F), which many around here consider room temperature, and just put a sweater on if we feel chilled.

As long as there is adequate supply runs for heated air in your basement, you can help force heat down there by partially, or fully, closing the registers in the hottest place in the house. From there move to the next warmest place and close them a bit. The heat will stay on until the thermostat is happy, and you can often get a better balance to the heat in your house this way.
