If I wanted to watch the NHL All-Star game, I would. What ever happened to the Olympics being the best amateur athletes in the world? It used to be that the Olympics were a stepping stone to the pros...do well and get a shot at making it a career. Now it is the NHL, the NBA and other professional leagues sending their best. I used to look forward to watching, now I can't be bothered to even turn it on.
Part of what prompted it, is the fact the most Olympic sports do host the best in the world in their discipline. Track, swimming, skiing, etc, have always showcased the best in the world, not just the amateurs. With hockey, it took the cooperation with the professional leagues to make it work. Plus with hockey in the past, teams like the 'Russian Army' team, who probably could not even load a rifle, that played hockey full time though were labelled as soldiers, had an unfair advantage.
I really enjoy watching the Olympic hockey, both men and women. By the viewing statistics, and it being one of the most watched sports, it would seem others enjoy it too.
Around here, I enjoy watching the Calgary Hitmen, a minor league team, just as much as the flames. There seems to be more heart in their play. I guess this is one thing with the Olympics, I do believe it brings out more heart in the NHL players that attend.

I feel the same way. The Olympics has become the best of the best and that's ok but somewhere there should be a venue where amateurs can have their day. I guess the Olympic committee figured out that many athletes were in essence pros anyway.
There are actually a lot of competitions that host amateurs only. From collegiate sport, Pan Am Games, Commonwealth games, and many more. They just don't get the coverage (and viewership) of the Olympics or pro sports.
